Some of these guys are in game, some are not. Personally I love the AP Hill so much more that the regular one. But here you have Samuel Jones, Turner Ashby, James Kemper, George "Tige" Aanderson, William Barksdale who are not in the game, and all but Samuel Jones were Brigadiers, but I think they add depth to the game even if they only commanded a brigade. The army structure was different than USA, and these guys were important. Samuel Jones was a Major General who helped create the defense of Atlanta, so he should get Fort Defender ability. French and Parsons are in the game but are clone generals unless you use these pictures. Tige Anderson was considered one of the best generals in the war, and Turner Ashby was Stonewall's screener and a huge reason for the success in the Shenandoah in 1862, he was Stonewall's JEB Stuart. I hope you have fun with these!!! Thanks to everyone for helping me figure out how to add generals and modify things, this is great fun!

And I think I am not alone in giving a big thanks for you doing these ... It's wonderful to get rid of the generic general portraits and to add these generals into the game

Here is a better file for J. Cox from earlier in the post. I removed the writing from the picture and was able to make his head fit better in the game at the proper age for the war.

The bottom is a little choppy but it gets cut off by the general's name at the bottom and you don't see that part. The main thing is his head is smaller and closer to the other generals' sizes.

Just got back from the Gettysburg Battlefield.

Had to make Rufus Dawes even though he was Brevetted a Brigadier in 1865. Also Baxter was amazing that first day. Webb also was integral in the battle. Cruft was just someone I think was overlooked in this game.

Enjoy.

The previous file in this post for Carr was too small for the unit file, so here is one with a larger face more like the ones from the game.

Thanks it was one of the first ones I did (obviously) I always meant to go back and adjust it.

I'll try and update the pack with your latest for the weekend and I may have something up my sleeve for JD Cox :)

You have done a great job, I just finally put Carr in the game and the unit file needed some TLC. I actually went back again and shifted him over to the left a little more, so add this file to your pack instead.

Looking forward to your next uploads :D

What are the steps to adding these portraits to the game? I would like to fill in the default portraits and recently created Gen. Barksdale and it would be awesome to have the portrait you have uploaded. Thanks for the uploads.

Hi There,

It is a little bit of a process to edit generals and add generals, but you just have to stick with it and you'll figure it out. A lot of what I do in my game was learned by trial and error, common sense, and help from the great guys on this forum. If you read through this thread you will see some of my initial questions, and then I started another thread which addresses generals promotions etc. You will see how I started out with no knowledge of this and then just kept at it until it made sense. The basics are below for changing generals promotions and attributes etc. and help to learn how to make a completely new general. The key for a new general is to make new model and unit files, add aliases in two spots for BOTH model and unit, and then add an event in the Leader event file to spawn the general. If you look in the event file you can just choose a general from the region you want , copy and paste underneath, and then edit with the new general info and spawn date, then save.

The key is to remember to add both unit and model files, make sure all the new numbers, names, portrait names, and aliases make sense, and delete the cache file.

To just add a portrait, you need to add the new files to unit, portrait, and army folders within the graphics folder, and then edit the model file for that general to point to the correct graphic file. They will say genericgeneral for the clone generals.

Basic changes to the current stats of the leaders are easy as long as you are doing basic changes to the existing mdl file. Just figure out what you want to change and change it, the best way being comparison to other generals and see what works, i.e. adding lines for "Forager" "Charismatic General" etc., changing stats, or seniority

MAKE SURE TO DELETE THE CACHE FILE AT THE BOTTOM

Regarding Promotions:

First make a copy of the MDL file for the leader you want to change. Then open the original.
The main thing to remember is to add the TechUpgrade line in the original MDL file, and change the Max General rating to 2 or 3, and save it.
(compare you file to one star mdl files of already upgradable generals)
Rename the copy of the MDL file to make sense according to the number scheme, i.e Walker's original file is 357. His new file for his 2-star ratings will be 870
Then look at another 2 star upgrade MDL file, like 291 Johnson, and look at each line making sure to change 870 Walker accordingly so the image files, alias name, etc are correct.
Next add a line with correct name in the alias file on the bottom, and also the mdl alias file in the main alias folder. This will make the two mdl files talk to each other correctly.
The new alias name will need a 2 like the line in the MDL folder...

You can use the splitter, but I recommend going this route first until you see how each file is talking to the other.

Hope this helps. Give it a shot and then ask questions, that is what I did.

tribeticus, Thanks for the help I was able to get the portraits loaded and a couple of new leaders added. So far everything has turned out great. If you are taking requests with the portraits, could you have a look at Confederate General John S. Bowen? I haven't seen a picture for him in this thread unless I have overlooked it. He is my next general to mod into the game. Thanks for the help.

Wow, he was a Major General and a good one. Surprised I don't know much about him. I will add him to the top of the list!

Brigadier General Speed Smith Fry (USA)

Sat Aug 20, 2016 4:29 am

Here is my first attempt at colorizing. I noticed that S.Fry's (Speed Fry) portrait in the game is actually James Barnet Fry. I actually changed the name in the game to James, but his story still shows up as Speed Fry, so I decided to try my hand at colorizing. I think it is okay. The files are named SSFry so they won't overwrite the original SFry, though you can change to SFry so you don't have to edit any of the model files, etc. Or change SFry to JFry first.

Brigadier General Henry Walton Wessells (USA)

Sat Aug 20, 2016 10:56 am

My second colorization. Wessells is a model in the vanilla game, though he is H. Wessels. He served in the Peninsula and commanded the rear-guard during McClellan's change of base. He was placed over the sub-district of Albemarle May 3, 1863. On April 17, 1864, he was attacked at Plymouth, North Carolina by General Robert F. Hoke. Outnumbered 15,000 men and the CSS Albemarle to 3,000 men, he surrendered after holding out three days. After he was exchanged, he became commissary of prisoners and was in charge of a conscription center in New York.

Brigadier General Edward Stuyvesant Bragg (USA)

Sat Aug 20, 2016 12:24 pm

My last effort for today: Edward S. Bragg. Bragg joined the 6th Wisconsin (my home state) as a Captain. Severely wound at Antietam, Bragg eventually was the Colonel of the 6th Wisconsin and was made Brigadier General of the famed Iron Brigade in 1864.

I tried to give Bragg a little more color than my previous entries. I've found that most of the colorized pictures are a little washed out compared to the saturated vanilla game portraits. Hope you like it. Edward S. Bragg is not in the vanilla game :(
