A must have thread to get us into the Spanish Civil War mood

Spanish Civil War is interesting for a lot of us, because it is a kind of prelude to World War 2 and it has the classic feel of the clash of two totally different ideologies and a hint of things to come to Europe and beyond.

My knowledge about this conflict is still rather limited, but I saw a few interesting movies and documentaries about it:

A word of warning: DON'T buy The Spanish Civil War (released in 1982) from the same author as Battle for Spain (released in 2006) is a revised edition with new information from the Russian and German archives!

Land and Freedom is indeed a great film, as you say, Carnium. Loosely based in Orwell's "Homage to Catalonia" a crude depiction of the Civil War, the people who came from abroad to fight just for their ideas and the fights between communists and anarchists inside the Republicans. A must see.

I can recommend Beevor's "The Battle for Spain".

Squad Battle SCW will make a great tactical companion game.

+1 for Beevor's Battle for Spain - next to me as I write this (in Palau Saverdera, Catalonia) - was actually first published in 1982 before his better known Stalingrad - but was revised and re-issued in 2006.

I also just noticed Beevor's wife is Artemis Cooper - author of a recent biography of Patrick Leigh Fermor - he who wandered across Europe in 1933 and later, during the war captured the German commander in Crete - and settled in the Mani peninsula - and wrote several books - most of which are worth reading.

+1 for homage to Catalonia too.

Hearts of Iron 2 & 3 have scenarios for the SCW for those of you who perhaps have those games.

The Spanish Civil War and Spanish Holocaust, both by Paul Preston, are fantastic books on this subject.

Very interesting. Is there a version with English subtitles? Amazon only has the Spanish version without any subs.

Thank you OP. The trailer of Land and Freedom seems very good. My prior movie exposure on SCW was only Pan's labyrinth, and that was a very biased film.

I find it amazing that the AGE engine could work for SCW, what other conflicts can it model? Chinese civil war 1924-1950?

What's new:
- added youtube links to all six parts of Granada TV Spanish Civil War documentary. A MUST SEE!
- added two new trailers for movies

This game has revived my interest in the SCW. I've always had an interest in the subject, but I see that it is a fascinating subject. I'm very interested in movies on the topic.

I would also be very interested in knowing whether there's any kind of period drama series set during the SCW.

Currently reading the Hugh Thomas book, and watching the BBC documentary which I see is also listed here.

It would be great if this title gets more scenarios and continues to grow!

I also found a youtube link to The Siege of the Alcazar film.

Unfortunately I found it through this ridiculous skinhead white supremacist site, but since its on youtube nobody has to go through there thankfully.

I've also located english subtitles. I thought from the Wikipedia page that it looked like a very interesting flick, it was filmed during the SCW I believe or immediately following the war. It is an Italian film and apparently won a bunch of awards in Fascist Italy.

So even though it's certainly going to be horrendously biased it's still an interesting piece of film history and a (very slanted) view into the time period.

I can post the links if anyone is interested I haven't watched it yet only just found it.

There is also an excellent series of 3 comic books called No Pasarán by Vittorio Giardino (NBM Publishing, 2000-2008). The comic is reminiscent of Orwell's take because it focuses on Republican infighting (in this case during the Ebro Offensive).
