What is the point of the “Surrender” special order?

Can using it deny the winning side possible NM gains from destroying the unit?

I'm not sure of the mechanics off-hand. The only time I've ever really used it is when I thought someone was going to assault a small garrison for the purpose of milking promotions for their commanders.

It's good to see you back, and thanks Cardinal Ape. That's one reason I never though of.

I've used it when I already have a single militia auto-garrison seiged. I've ordered it to destroy the depot that spawned the militia on the first turn of the siege. On the second turn, I ordered it to surrender. The surrender cost me around 5VP and no NM, whereas I assume it is usually about ~25VP (it's been awhile) and 1NM.

I use this order when a unit, such as a supply or artillery unit, is bound to be captured and I have no play to get it to safety.

If you're not being besieged you can use the Disband SO. AFAIK Surrender is only available if your stack is being besieged.
