Corps and Armies

Hi guys!

I have a question about assigning corps to armies. I have searched but have not found an answer.

I hope this makes sense!

Say I have Lee in Alexandria and Joe Johnston in Harper's Ferry. They both command an army and their command radius overlap. Longstreet is assigned to Lee and currently in Leesburg or wherever. I want to change the corps that Longstreet commands from Lee to JoJo. Is there a way to do that?

In other words is there a way to assign a corps to a specific army when two overlap?

The only way I've figured out to do it is to give command to a corps of someone senior to the
corps commander you want to replace and send him there.

Have you tried getting Longstreet's corps closer to Johnston's army than to Lee's.

You have to move one army commander away from theater. Corps will assign themselves to closest army leader and if two are about same distance then the one with higher seniority. You won't need two army commanders anyway within the same area. In my experience, corps work better working under the same army commander rather than two different. Click on your army commander and hold down the shift key. This will show you the army commander range in which he affects the corp leaders.

Disband Lee's army. Then assign Longstreet to JoJo. Then give Lee his army back. If you remove an army command and reform it before the turn is run, then you won't take any of the NM or VP penalty shown. Also, don't forget to re-assign any corps that may have lost their army during the restructuring.

It might not make much sense but sometimes I want an existing corps from one army to join another army prior to moving. That way I can hit an objective with an army with a whole new corps.

Remove multiple army commands from the same theatre. In your situation, you want Longstreet to be able to support his friends in Harpers Ferry AND Alexandria.


I run into this often when I'm playing as the Union. I'll leave Banks in Baltimore to recruit, I'll send Halleck to DC to train, I'll send Grant east once he gets his three stars, and then I somehow have 4 armies on top of each other....

Yes you are correct. I sometimes have an overabundance of armies. LOL !

Personally I would never assign an army to Halleck or Banks because they are so weak. I'd rather get Lyon and Grant vamped up right away in Missouri and Illinois, Thomas in Kentucky, and Hooker in the East. Banks, Halleck, and Buell can hang out in various cities and still use their attributes, but they offer little in terms of commanding an army. Same with Fremont, McDowell, Butler etc, they all just fade away while in 1862 the other guys come up the ranks quick and take control with their better stats, and that way you don;t have to unload an army and suffer any NM loss.

Banks should be in NYC as its the biggest city, Halleck is best in Cairo to train, McClellan in PA. Buell should go to Baltimore to increase loyalty and make more $. Not even worth using them in command.

Not if loyalty in NYC is low. Loyalty has a big effect on recruiting. I usually put
him in Philadelphia or Boston.
