One more queston

the game is currently 1863 and iv only had a few skirmishes throughout the game (I am playing mostly defensively) . is this normal. Why haven't the Union attacked me? the longer this stand off continues, the better off for me correct?

No longer u wait more stronger the union comes, and they will have better leaders too. After 63 union will b ready of building the armies and probably soon u start feeling the hammer of union.

Check your game settings, by dropping to the Main Menu and selecting Options. Assure that the AI is actually turned on and check the aggressiveness and command level or experience level --I'm not sure at the moment how it's called-- and set it to at the most Sgt if you are just learning.
