Division Building and Cost Analysis

Here's a breakdown of six hypothetical divisions, comparing them in terms of cost vs combat power. Each is version of my preferred standard division, which is 12 infantry, 1 sharpshooter, 1 cavalry, and 3 artillery.

Note that I am not claiming this is the best division composition, I am only using it to compare the costs of using different brigades. These numbers are taken from the Union side and reflect base values (without taking inflation into consideration or leader bonuses). The options reflect those available in the first couple turns of the 1861 April campaign, version 1.03.

Base combat strength is not the best measurement of a division's effectiveness. The AGEOD engine is complex. Artillery units, for example, have different ranges and different effectiveness at those ranges, so switching out one type of artillery for another does more than simply change combat strength. I have used combat strength as a general benchmark only.

Brigade Composition is expressed as follows: [R/R]/S should be read as [Regular/Regular]/Skirmisher, meaning a brigade of 2 regular line units and an imbedded skirmisher. [R/C/C]/A/C should be read as [Regular/Conscript/Conscript]/Artillery/Cavalry, and represents the large mixed brigades available in New York and Connecticut.



Division A:

This division has no militia or volunteers. All line soldiers are conscripts or better. This "Ready-to-Go" division will cost you 415 money, 144 conscripts, 87 war supply, and have a base combat strength of 380.

Division B is identical to Division A, with one exception. I have switched one of the 10lb batteries for a second 12lb. This changed saves 15 money and 10 War Supply while increasing combat strength by one. A single point of combat strength is negligible, but the savings in money and war supplies could start to add up after several divisions.

Division C takes a very different approach with a militia focused build. In fact, the only trained troops belong to a brigade with an embedded cavalry unit. It keeps the two 12lb artillery batteries but now has an independent sharpshooter battalion. At a cost of 350 money, 114 conscripts, and 77 war supply you get a base combat strength of 320. Interestingly, you save no war supply. The savings of 50 money and 30 conscripts comes at a loss of 61 combat strength. That combat strength can regained by training the militia, but until they upgrade you'll not only have less power, but lower cohesion and a 10% movement penalty if the militia winds up out of its home state.

Division D goes one step further, using only militia and independent cavalry, sharpshooter, and artillery. The totals for this build come in at 340 money, 108 conscripts, 77 war supply, and 310 combat strength. We have saved another 10 money and 6 conscripts and only lost an additional 10 combat strength, which will be regained when just one militia upgrades. It would seem that Division D is a better choice than Division C, but these savings have required committing one of the precious independent cavalry units to a division. Not worth it, in my opinion.

Division E takes a middle route, relying primarily on militia but using brigades with embedded cavalry and sharpshooters. For 360 money, 120 conscripts, and 77 war supply we get a division with 341 combat strength. So for a cost of 20 more money and 12 more conscripts, we get an additional 31 combat strength. That's not much, but this build will give you more cavalry flexibility down the road.

Division F also relies on militia, but includes a mixed brigade of infantry, cavalry, artillery. These brigades appear very costly, but are they? Final thoughts (for now)

Unless you're willing to use 6lb artillery, you're going to wind up spending about the same amount of war supplies no matter what you do. Players have a lot more flexibility in both how to raise and spend money and conscripts. This makes war supply the critical resource in building units, and properly managing your war supplies should be a priority. When you consider that you can free up money and conscripts for additional units, further placing demand on war supplies, this becomes even more important.

When it comes to money and conscripts, players face a choice of paying more for better-trained units upfront, or going cheap and hoping those weaker forces will be able to hold off the enemy until they have a chance to upgrade. While this isn't a revelation to experienced players, I hope that some will find the actual numbers interesting or useful when experimenting with builds.

A very informative post. As for me, I mostly play CSA and have tried militia heavy divisions, and using divisions with only a few.
At the start, and if you plan on holding Manassas, it's better to use divisions with regulars. Once you get training officers, the divisions with militia are doable.

You are missing 1 factor, training time. It might be interesting to add a militia/3 6 pounder division, for the quick and dirty reference point.

Otherwise fascinating stuff.

Is there a conscript/money/ws charge for upgrades? I thought an upgrade cost a unit from reserves.
