How do you block rivers?

Tue Nov 05, 2013 4:00 pm

What is necessary to block the enemy from crossing a navigable river?

A) with a force of troops?
A.1) just walking from one side of the river to the other?
A.2) using riverine movement?
B) with a supply trace?

Does the posture (offensive or defensive) of the fleet matter?

With 4 ships you can blockade crossing.

If the enemy sees your ships at the beginning of the turn, he cannot plot infantry river transport over those regions. If however he cannot see them, he can plan it, but he will be either blocked or attacked by your ships in the turn process. I do not remember if your ships need to be in offensive posture to attack riverine movement infantry though.

For river crossings there is always a 10% chance that a force will evade any ships and slip across.

Do transports count, or do all elements have to be combat? (ex. One unit of gunboats with 2 ship and a unit of river transports supporting.)

But only for the AI. If the AI's ships block you, you can't plot the move.

You can never plot a move over gunboats, but if you plot a move and during turn execution 4 gunboats show up at the crossing, there is a 10% chance you will pass.
