"Next Turn" button takes me to main menu

Sun Jun 09, 2013 6:23 pm

Hello,

I am in a GC with Russia, and when I hit "next turn", it takes me back to the menu, with an info box that is saved the .ORD file. When I hit resume game, it reloads the turn (with the loading screen), and when I hit "next turn", it does the same thing.

I have loaded two different backups of two previous turns (so three turns in total), and this continues. It started on the previous patch last night, and then I installed the new patch today and have the same issue. Any and all help is appreciated, as I was about 30% through the long grind!

Is your .hst file empty (0 bytes)? Do you have the logs from the turn where it appears to crash? We will need a little more information to assist you.

The .hst was empty on the first turn that locked up, but not the two backup turns I loaded that also crash.

In between my first post and behavior, I started a new campaign (had to fill my fix), and run a few turns, and just returned to two backups ago of the crashing game. This time, instead of booting me to the main menu, a popup occurred saying the game crashed, and the game closed.

I'm not sure which logs you seek, these are in the Pride of Nations/VGN/Logs folder:

AI log and Host log would not upload.

It seems to be the (now old) problem of a code on AI agent, which can only happen when you are continuing an old game. I can probably clear up your saved game for you if you really want to continue this old game, but for that I'll need the HST file, the TRN and ORD file of your nation.

If you could clear it up, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for your assistance!

Pocus, I am having the same problem, the game drops to main menu when I end turn. At first, this happened occasionally, now it happens every time. But the thing is, I started the new game just a couple weeks ago, it is by no means old. What should I do?

I should note that this is a bit different, in that there is no info box saying is saved the .ord file.

Forgive my ignorance, but where would I find the mainlog file?

In the Logs folder which is in the main VGN folder.
"Umbrellas will not be opened in the presence of the enemy." Duke of Wellington before the Battle of Waterloo, 1815.

"Top hats will not be worn in the Eighth Army" Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery of Alamein K.G.

Last night, I tried ending turn four different times, after reloading three times, and the game dropped into the menu every time. That is why I reported it. Today, it worked fine after I ended the same turn, and five more turns. The bug seems to have disappeared. If it reappears, I will post the appropriate log file.

Very confusing, as nothing changed between last night and this morning, but I am not complaining.

Pocus, as always, I appreciate the wonderful support you give, and I thank you, Ebbingford, as well.

Fixed the issue. Go to your saved games file. The file path is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Pride of Nations\VGN\Save (assuming you use steam) then open the file with your current game as the title. I closed PON and deleted the hst ord and trn files. I then went into the backup 1 folder and took the four files there and loaded them up as a saved file in place of the deleted files. I was able to continue game play starting from the previous turn. So far no problems and I've passed the turn with which the issue started. i hope this helps anyone else out rather then having to rely on someone to rewrite the txt.

Ive encountered this bug many many many times in my Japan playthrough (to 1875 so far, seeing it every few years at least).
The workaround listed by others above has worked every single time, so i do recommend it.

Edit: I just noticed that a similar thing to what i mentioned below was talked about in the patch notes, so nvm.

Just coincidentally when i just experienced this bug, i happened to be watching the messages/tips that appear during turn resolution. (usually i alt-tab and do something else)
Right before the end of turn resolution, i saw a message that may have been an error, telling me that the something else was accessing the file/preventing access (or something to that effect, i dont remember the exact words).

It sounded very much like the common problem you see in a wide variety of games that is the game not having permission to access certain resources.(ive run into it on a few betas) Just a guess on my part though.
I dont know if its a coincidence or just regular message behavior, but i hope it might make it easier to find the solution.

Just for the sake of clarity, i am running the game with administrator privileges and no windows error message appeared when the previous turn was resolving.

My .hst file is 0 bytes and empty, so the problem seems to be that file fails to generate.

That explains why the workaround of loading a new turn (with a .hst file that isn't empty) works.

But what causes the empty file?

The game does that from time to time. I am not sure why. You should be able to load the previous turn (look in your backup1 folder, and get the .hst that is not 0 bytes).

Yes, i was able to continue from the previous turn without any trouble. But given how long each turn takes, it's frustrating to lose one. :)
