Retreat Bug?

Hi,
played PBEM and had a battle.

There was a battle between the two rivales, Casear wins it. Pompej retreat in the province from which caesar came. Why not in the three regions which are military controlled by pompej?
Why did he walk to casaers start position which is military controlled by casaer?

I am not sure, and sometimes there may happen some strange things in the retreat algorithms, but I would guess that it could be due to the relatively worst terrain/weather of the other surrounding regions.
A backup turn, to run some tests of battle results, could maybe help shed some more light...

Level of control matters somewhat for retreat, as do the factors Franciscus mentions. However, I think the rule used for retreat is units retreat to the most annoying region possible. Kidding of course, but understanding retreat is a bit of science and a bit of luck.

Hi
I finally got time to test your save.
I ran the battle several turns. Most of the times Pompeius wins. In the couple of times he lost, he always retreated to Vindomagus...
So, I it seems I am unable to reproduce the result you guys had in your game, sorry...
