Have you checked out Pocus' new game Field of Glory Empires|Field of Glory II? (Matrix/Slitherine)? I like many of the Total War conversions like Roma Surrectum, Europa Babarorum, and Divide et Imperium. But all of these are more so sandboxes; although educational compared to AJE which really puts particular conflicts into a historical context and framework.
