Best of the Best

I just discovered Dexter Hoyos, how I managed to miss reading his works over all these years is unbelievable, and I'm working my way through his Mastering the West with the help of the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World and Michael Grant's A Guide to the Ancient World.

Wow, Hoyos is good! In my opinion, he's heads and shoulders above: Hart, Cottrell, Goldsworthy, Lazenby or Miles.

Why? his prose is 1st class, both extremely readable and enjoyable, and his scholarship is incredible. I've already plunked down cash for The Carthaginians and Hannibal's Dynasty: Power and Politics in the Western Mediterranean, 247-183 BC.

Don't make my mistake and miss reading Hoyos. Bang on your nearest library door or beat a path to Amazon.com and acquire one of his works.

Excuse me, I'm inspired to go and to fire up a game of HAN.
