I recently picked this up, and it my first Ageod title. My question is some units have a star in the lower left corner of the portrait. Additionally, one of my generals received a laurel on a black background in the same spot. Is this an indicator of experience? When I checked the unit displays for the cohorts in the unit, none of them had a lot of experience.

Yes, those symbols represent the unit (or leader) experience

IIRC, a bronze star means the elements os the unit have 1 star, a silver star elements with 2 stars, gold star elements with 3 stars, and I think if 4 or more starred elements, a kind of laurel
