What is the best-but cheapest Roman unit I can put on a ship for fighting at sea

Coming up against the Greeks-Pyrrhus now in BoR. Blockading the Boot of Italia-so I know eventually I am going to encounter opposition from sea forces from Greece to break the blockade. I want to save my best for land combat. Will urban militia work on ships?
Hey I'm playing Rome-we're by nature land lubbers. Learning curve. And if a storm brews up I don't want my best units drowning.

If your militia is not locked, it will fight on ships. Just make sure before you load it to do a trial march. If it marches to the next region, even at 70 plus days, it will load on ships and fight.
Best of luck.

I have never put land units on ships for fighting, only for transportation.
Are you sure they actually fight? I think they can become casualties but don't really add anything to the combat

The only land units that actually fight as part of a naval battle are those with models holding the attribute *canassaultwater*... those units will be included in the calculations of the assault power...in one word, it's the Epibates (a.k.a. Marines) units, the Rhodian marines, and the Cretan archers... normally, Pirates should do it to, but I am unsure it's the case now

Well I'll report back once there is a clash. Don't know when though. Just at the start of this scenario. But just for the sake of argument-wouldn't any foot military unit fight? Though not very well if under attack-no matter where they are located. Can't see them just sitting there.

On second thought I'll procure infantry suited for that ocean environment-keep it realistic. Keep the urban militia in the cities. Thanks all for your input. I really enjoy this game got to be careful about using fantasy as strategy.

Even if not fighting, due to the nature of the engine, they might soak up a few hits, but not very often.
