Most common game option settings

For the AJE games, what do most folks like to use for the following settings when playing the AI? And, what settings to use when playing PBEM? I have not tried PBEM yet. I want to get my head around the game with some AI games first.
Activation Rule - I think I want to start on the medium setting where you get movement penalties if activation fails, vs. not being able to move at all during a turn if activation fails. But, what is the generally accepted setting
Activation Bonus
Delayed Commitment
Foreign Entry (what does this even mean?)
Finally - what is a good first scenario to play in the base AJE game as a newbie? I also have Cantabrian Wars and the Spartacus scenario.
Thanks!

More important than activation is attrition and supply. I wsd going to ask that myself. These are questions that apply to all ageod titles really. If you're interested in pbem then use the same settings with the ai so that you get used to the gameplay. I'm sure someone like orso or ace will let you know what settings are the pbem norm. Since I have yet to do any pbem myself id like to know as well.
I prefer the medium setting for activation simply bc I've always found it annoying since birth of America came out that your leaders can't move if they fail the check.

Good point. Let's add the attrition setting to our list of questions.

If you're playing aje don't worry about foreign intervention. It really doesn't apply to aje.
In civil war 2 it is a system whereby the confederate player can get Britain and France to intervene on their side. It goes up if one side has the lead in vp and morale. It can go up by one or two each turn. Once it hits 100 then foreign intervention occurs. Conversely if it reaches -100 then intervention is forever impossible thereafter. I can't think of any aje, bor, or han scenarios where fi applies.
Others will go into the math behind it in this thread I'm sure.
Again Orso will hopefully see this thread and come till the rescue. Theres plebty of others who can explain the intricacies of it but if you want to ask any quick questions about aje or any other ageod game I have them all and play them all. So pm me if you like, others did that for me

and I'm happy to pay it forward!

It seems kind of silly to leave an option in a game where it does not apply. Why couldn't they take foreign intervention out of games where it is not used. That seems kind of lazy.

Just bumping this thread once. Hopefully someone can help us understand the best/most common game setting options.
Thanks!

Hi
I can tell you how I play and test the game vs AI.
I leave all other settings (Media, Game, System) in default values; regarding AI, I use: "Tribune" ranking (sometimes Consul); Medium AI detect bonus; Normal aggressiveness; All behaviors ON; More time to the AI; and "Hard" activation bonus.
YMMV, but to me this gives the best gaming experience vs AI
(Note: when I play - which unfortunately I do not do often... - I am a conservative player that likes to play "historically" and do not exploit AI "weaknessess")

Activation is most fun at hard, but most players use medium as the player has the most options, with penalties.
Delayed commitment is medium to large. This is helpful to letting armies gather.
Foreign entry means much more in other games. In AJE games it does not matter.
Good base games: Caesar vs Pompey and Marius vs Sulla. Solid games, fun to play.
