Hi guys,

I new to the forum and I would like to ask some advice from the fan base.

I enjoy strategy and grand strategy war game and Im famlliar with these kinds of game, most from Paradox. I enjoy and play titles such as Crusarder Kings II, Europa Universalis.

My favorite ones are grand strategy war games such as Darkest hour and Hearts of iron.

Looking for new games, I discovered AGEOD, American Civil War II, and later Alea jacta esta and Hannibal Terror of Rome.

After some research , I was inclined to buy american civil war II, since I found plety of material in the internet (video, AAR, etc).

However, since Im brazilian I dont know a lot about american civil war, only basic stuff, surely nothing about major battles, most important generals and how the war went and major theathers.

I think that my lack of knowlodge about this stuff, and knowing a new engine mechanics will make it even harder for me to enjoy the game. (altough considering what I watch it seems a great game)


After I discovered Han ToR, which runs in a scneario I enjoy better than ACW.

However, I couldnt find much material in the internet about this game (videos, AARs and so for)

It seems for me, but not sure, that this game is a little more outdated than ACWII (including map grafhics) and that its even more complex.

So I ould like to ask the follwing?

1) I need to have a good knowlodge about ACW in order to play ACWII?

2) Is HAN ToR more complex than ACWII?

3) Where can I find material (mostly, tutorials, AARs) of Han ToR?

4) How do I download the games, I m not computer wizard, I only use steam for my online game purchasing and not familiar with AGEOD. Didnt think the site was clear about this subject.

Hi geogus -- No apologies necessary for your English, which is quite good.

Regarding CW2 -- I really don't think you need a deep knowledge of the American Civil War to get enjoyment out of this game. You're not obligated to 're-enact' the war by any means, so you shouldn't feel pressure to do things you're 'supposed' to do because those are the things that happened historically. Play how you want to play.

You can organize things around a couple very basic strategies. If you play the Union, know you have many advantages. You can easily outproduce the Confederate States (CSA). You have a much stronger Navy than the CSA, and you should use that navy to put a blockade stranglehold on them, preventing them from using their ports and trading with European powers. All basic stuff -- you will want to build up your army and drive south toward the CSA capital of Richmond, and eventually drive in eastward from the regions around the Mississippi River, putting the CSA in a vice grip, having to defend their western and northern flanks. All easier said than done, to be sure, but again, you don't need to be a Civil War scholar to play this game. You'll know who the good generals are because they will have good ratings.

You have the comfort, playing as the Union, of knowing that you're 'supposed' to win -- you simply have large strategic advantages over the CSA. Playing as the CSA will be a much harder affair, so you might want to get your feet wet playing the USA.

I can't speak to Alea Jacta Est, as I don't own it (but of course eventually will). But don't be too intimidated by Civil War 2. It's as historically deep and complex as you want it to be. The important thing is to have fun.

If you are new to AGEOD games and would like the best game for someone new, I would recommend Ala Jacta Est. ACW is excellent but can be overwhelming due to size to someone new to the series. I don't have Hannibal TOR, so I can't comment on it but I know AJE is excellent and relatively low unit density. With low unit density, you can learn the system without being overwhelmed by large numbers of units. Also the AI will put up a challenging game for someone learning the system. IMO, Ala Jacta Est is the best of all Ageod games as an introductory game with the same level of challenge and excitement as other larger and more complex AGEOD titles.

What is your native language?
French get some extra subforums and many users for example.

Dont know french, so Im afraind I cant use this forum.

Both games are excellent. The Roman game is easier to play. The ACW game is one of the very best games on the market.
