Different colors in replacement screen

Sometimes the number of hits missing is shown in red with exclamation points ("!"). Sometimes it is greyed out. Sometimes it is black.
I can't seem to find what the meaning is of each of these different ways to display the missing information. Any guidance?

I think it may have something to do with the number of elements that are very close to elimination. I get exclamation points after very bloody battles.

What about when it is a grayed out color.
Any definitive answers? I assume they are there for a reason.

Well, I'm not sure but I think its related to the amount of replacements you have; when you have about enough to replace the hits, its black, when there's a small shortage its greyed, and when there's not enough replacements the number is red with an exclamation mark.

I am guessing, but I agree with poweraxe, except I think the gray at the top mean the number of replacements you need, but that most of the troops who need them are not able to get them. I am certain that black means you have enough, and red means you need more.
The numbers at the top appear to be in tenths of an actual replacement point. In other words, if you have a red twenty at the top, you need two replacement points.

I thought that the Red exclamation mark meant you had elements missing in your army (full elements), but I maybe be wrong.

I believe that to be correct, or closer to what it means.
As numerous times I've had quite a few more replacement points than needed, already in the pool, and it's still shown the red exclamation points. It only happened after big battles where I had lost whole elements and then disappeared the next turn IIRC after they were renewed.

I believe there is a tooltip on questions marks, but it can be difficult to triggers because the marks are small. This is indeed the amount of hits missing in the elements that the replacement you are checking on can strengthen. And there is delay and inertia, even if you have replacements, then you may need several turns to have your units back to full strength, in particular if the units are in poor shape, still fighting or in tricky supply situations.
