Leader graphics

Wed Nov 24, 2010 8:12 pm

I thought I would start a new thread dedicated to increasing the number of leader graphic sets in RUS.

There are still far to many generic portraits in the game. Let's change that!

This original appeal was the starting point for this mod. However, it would have remained a small project if I hadn't been joined in my effort by two other fans of RUS:
- Jack54 who does a fantastic job creating new graphic sets.
- Aeontal who has supplied Jack and myself with huge amounts of historical portraits.
Together we have created a graphics mod which should highly improve immersion into the Russian Civil war by giving a face to ~ 150 generals. :)

As of RUS version 1.03a all graphic sets in this mod have become part of the official version of the game. This mod has therefore become obsolete. I won't update it any further.

Thanks SEPRUS for honouring Jack and myself with adopting our work. We truely appreciate it. :coeurs:

- WH3: G.A. Verzhbitsky
- WH3: I.V. Savitsky
- WH4 (= North-Western Whites): A.P. Lieven

Version 1.4.

Only a few new graphic sets this time. I have been very busy working on old portraits to get them into a form the original RUS artist can use. You can see the result in patch 1.01 for yourself as it contains a lot of beautiful new graphic sets made by Gilles Pfeifer (with a little help from me :) ).

Here is what's new in V. 1.4.:
- DON: A.P. Fitskhelaurov
- POL: S. Skrzynski
- WH5 (= Northern White): G.E. Elvengren
- WHI: N. de Bode

Most importantly, I have removed a lot of graphic sets of which now official versions exist:
- G.K. Zhukov
- Ghai Khan
- K. Manner

- H. Matsuura
- G. Petrov
- Gronroos
- N.A. Schors
- Vsevolod
- D.P. Zhloba
- P.E. Tillo

Version 1.4a.

I wanted to release a smaller update before Christmas and New Year. It focuses exclusively on Ukrainian and Polish commanders. By now there is only one Ukrainian commander left who uses the generic graphis set. :) This should improve immersion for the Drang scenario a little bit.

New leader graphic sets in 1.4 and 1.4a:

- POL: W. Iwaszkiewicz
- POL: K. Raszewski
- UKR: P. Bolbochan
- UKR: A. Wolf
- UKR: A. Grekov
- UKR: V. Oskilko

Version 1.5.

Jack54 has kindly given me permission to include his amazing new graphic sets into this mod. Judge for yourself, but I for one believe that he has created some of the most beautiful leader graphics in RUS. Most of the 21 new graphic sets in version 1.5. were created by him.

- RED: Avksentevski
- RED: Avtonomov
- RED: Fedko
- RED: Gekker
- RED: Kork
- RED: Lazarev
- RED: Sapozhkov
- RED: Shorin
- RED: Sollogub
- RED: Sytin
- RED: Galler
- RED: Gikalo
- RED: Kikvidze
- RED: Kravchenko
- RED: Mironov
- RED: Samoylo
- WH3: Golovin
- WH3: Mikhailov
- WH3: Molchanov
- WH3: Ossipov
- WH3: Smolin

Version 1.6.

Again, a huge part of the work on this update has been done by Jack54. This mod wouldn't be growing at such a fast pace without his help. Version 1.6. adds 19 new leader graphic sets (11 by Jack, 8 by me).

A picture of the new graphic sets can be found in post # 81 of this thread.

- RED: Salmela
- RED: Yumashev
- WHI: Vitkovsky
- WHI: Timanovsky
- WHI: Toporkov
- WHI: Chekatovsky
- WHI: Lukomsky
- WHI: Abramov
- WHI: Kazanovich
- WHI: Romanovsky
- POL: Jung (Jack54's very first graphic set which I forgot to include in version 1.5)
- WH4: Gueorg
- WH4: von Neff
- WH4: Arseniev (the original had a really low resolution and it unfortunately shows)
- BAL: Puskar
- BAL: Zemitans
- WH5: Marushevsky
- WH5: Murusi (another portrait that had an extremely low resolution)
- WH3: Juna-Id-Khan (I had to paint half the turban by hand in order to get a usable Army.png)

Version 1.7.

This mod is continuing to grow rapidly. We are proud to post 24 new graphic sets, getting us to a total of 93. Three factions have received major improvements: Bolshevics, Don Cossacks and Sibirian Whites. Jack has outdone himself once more and has come up with new 14 graphic sets. I added another 11.

Pictures of the new graphic sets can be found in post #99 of this thread.

- RED: Sievers
- RED: Sablin
- RED: Iskritsky
- RED: Lashevich
- RED: Parsky
- RED: Ieremeev
- RED: Baltisky
- RED: Nemits
- RED: Markin
- WHI: Uspensky
- DON: Alekseev
- DON: Gulyga
- DON: Denisov
- DON: Bykadorov
- RED: Muraviev
- RED: Altfater
- DON: Bogatyrev
- WH3: Kosmin
- WH3: Martynov
- WH3: Akutin
- WH3: Khanzhin
- WH3: Ellerts-Ussov
- WH3: Matkovsky
- WH3: Grichin-Almazov
- WH3: Lokhvitsky

Jack's graphic set for F.F. Abramov has been attached to the DON leader (previously it had only been used for the WHI version of that leader).

Moreover, Jack went over the older mdl files and updated them to patch 1.01b. There were some minor changes made by the developpers which don't seem to have any in game effect as far as leaders are concerned. But better to be safe than sorry.

Version 1.8.

This time around the credit goes almost entirely to Jack. He came up with another 14 new graphic sets, I added 6 which brings us to an even 20. By now this mod contains a total of 113 new graphic sets.
Also I checked the latest patch and can confirm that this mod is compatible with patch 1.02a.

Pictures of the new graphic sets can be found in post #107 of this thread.

- RED: Nadiozhny
- RED: Grittis
- RED: Makhin
- RED: Chervanin
- RED: Kniaginsky
- RED: Hasu
- RED: Timoshenko
- RED: Kutiakov
- RED: Stogov
- WHI: Promtov
- WHI: Yuzefovich
- WHI: Gubin
- WHI: Cherepov
- WHI: Vinogradov
- WH2: Liupov
- WH2: Boldyrev
- WH3: Sladkov
- WH3: Onchokov
- WH3: Tolstov
- GRE: Nither

Version 1.9.

Jack and I managed to create another 21 new graphic sets bringing us to a total of 134 leader graphic sets. But we are quickly running out of historic portraits - in fact by now we are working with a lot of low quality photographies. This time around you will find a lot of new WHI and POL leaders:

Pictures of the new graphic sets can be found in post #108 of this thread.

- Ermakov
- Poliakov
- Khvesin
- Lechenko
- Piatakov
- Bredov
- Korvin-Krukovski
- Nezhentsev
- Pisarev
- Semiletov
- Ulagai
- Skobeltsyn (also fixed an issue making it impossible to promote him)
- Listowski (also fixed an issue making it impossible to promote him)
- Konarzewski
- Schubert
- Majewski
- Krajowski
- S. Haller
- Cholokashvili
- Artmeladze
- Jugheli

Version 2.0.

Adds a dozen new graphic sets:

- Kazansky
- Terpylo
- Tokmakov
- Bosch
- Karjalainen
- Slashev
- Ooy
- Suzuki
- Nishikawa
- Saito
- Nerel
- Madanin-Bek
- fixed mdl file for Sergeyev (existing graphic set was not used)
- changed G. V. Zinoviev to generic portrait. The SEPRUS team had him mistaken for G. E. Zinoviev, politburo member, head of Comintern and "dictator of Petrograd". Thanks Krot for finding this one!

Version 2.1.

As of beta patch 1.02b most of Jack's work has become part of the official patch line. This is what I hoped for from the very start: I always saw this mod as a gap-filler until the SEPRUS team either incorporated player made portraits or the original RUS artist Gilles Pfeifer had the time to make more graphic sets.

Version 2.1. of this mod removes all graphic sets that have become part of the official patches.

Enjoy!

The original thread with Jack54's work can be found here:
http://www.ageod-forum.com/showthread.php?t=19887
I will however continue to incorporate his leader graphics in what is no our mod.

Note: If somebody finds a historic picture of a leader missing in this game. I will create the necessary game files. So go ahead and post what you find! To make things easier, barbu has kindly created a list of all generals in RUS still missing leader graphics (the latest update can be found in post # 83 of this thread).

There are still far to many generic portraits in the game. Let's change that!

To start things off: Here is a portrait set of the young G. K. Zhukov:

How to get this into the game?

1) copy the Unit_ ...png files in your RUS\Graphics\Units\Leaders Units folder

2) copy the Army_...png files in your RoP\Graphics\Armies&Fleets\Leaders Armies folder

3) Go into your RUS\GameData\Models folder. Open "934REDG.K. Zhukov.mdl". Search for "Unit_RED_Generic.png" replace it with "Unit_RED_Zhukov.png". Save.

4) Do the same with "1017REDG.K. Zhukov" and "1112REDG.K. Zhukov".

5) Delete the "Models.Cached" file in the same folder. Don't worry, the file will be recreated automatically with the updated information the next time RUS is launched.

Note: If somebody finds a historic picture of a leader missing in this game. I will create the necessary game files. So go ahead and post what you find!

Thank you a lot! Keep them coming.

Right now U am working on the Polish general Zeligowski; after that I will start on your red Finns. Should make the Finnsih civil was scenario a little bit flashier.
And gives me an added reason to try it out.

I went through the Red MDL files one by one until I got upset and stopped :(
There are dozens of leaders with currently generic faces for whom I couldn't find any pictures... (Russians mostly, as you could tell).

Perhaps, as a stopgap solution, you could create several more generic faces, so we have more than one...

I had pretty much the same experience.

Actually I have had a similar experience with RoP, but at least I speak the languages of most of the parties to that conflict.
RUS should be easier (age of photography and all), but since I don't speak Russian or any other Eastern European languages. I am limited in my research.

The worst were to try to find the pictures of the Japanese leaders in the conflict. For a long while we thought we had the picture of the proper general, to discover in the end it was the one of an admiral. :bonk:

It is clear that a lot of work went into research. I am impressed. Which doesn't mean that it is impossible to find the missing historical portraits. ;) I will post the next batch soon.

Hopefully, some people will follow barbu's example and help. :coeurs:

It takes almost as much time researching leaders as it takes creating their portraits. :( That used to be different with ROP. The portraits where hand-drawn and it took a great amount of time to create new leader graphics.
With RUS, I got the impression you downgraded the quality of some historical pictures? To imitate its style, I usually have to go overboard with contrasts and use the red colour spectrum more than I like.

Although this should be self-evident by me posting in this forum. Cat Lord, you are of course free to use the new graphic sets in any way you choose to. If you want to follow the example of AGEOD and include them in future patches, it would be my pleasure. If not, well at least I had some fun. :)

Is there a way to collate all the graphic and AI mods so far done into a 'pre-patch'? Thanks,

(a quarter of an hour later)

This is frustrating :(

Unless one of our Russian co-game-owners :) knows of a russian site with portraits for Civil War Generals (not just the famous ones)...

OneArmedMexican, I have a suggestion. Could you create 20 portraits? - I will find you some ahistorical sources - 10 for the reds, 10 for the whites - and I will do "the paperwork" of modifying current MDLs so that not every general without a portrait uses the *same* generic portrait. The end-result will be 11 generic red portraits instead of 1, so at least more variety, and 11 white portraits instead of 2.

This will be much softer on everybody's eyes, I think.

Unfortunately I don't have time to find pictures at the moment, though I have thought of a way to help you looking for pictures on ru.net without speaking language. Maybe you have tried this?

Type leader name in wikipedia, if he has entry in English and no picture on left hand side go down and click on Русский under language, you might get lucky and have portrait on Russian Wikipedia, if not copy paste name in cyrillic and search. If this is not helpful or you already have done this PM me list of those you can't find and I will look on runet or in books I have. I can not do this until Sunday however.

Might be luck for leaders of all nationalities on runet as I think we have larger amount of data available in our language on this topic than in other ones.

Keep in mind that as per the forum rules, posting here carries with it an implicit approval for AGEOD to use what you post. :cthulhu:

That said, your volunteering the material for use is much appreciated, and I'm sure your fellow gamers will enjoy the adding of them to future patches

I like the idea. However, manipulating all those model files would propably take more time than creating the portraits.

For now, I will try to continue to provide more historical portraits (I still have portraits of Bermont-Avalov, Puskar and of course the one you provided of Sakharov left). Furthermore, it seems the people doing the original research still have quite a lot of unused portraits in store. Hopefully, they will send them to me. That should be more than I can handle.

Thank you for your help, I really appriciate it.

OneArmedMexican, thanks for mentioning me in the readme, however you're doing 99% of the work, and it's awesome work, btw.

Now, here is the list of MDLs / generals that have generic portraits even after portrait pack 1.2. I plan to remove names from this list as OneArmedMexican creates new portraits.

Note: If you see two filenames with "and" in between, it's the same person but two different MDL files, so there is 1 portrait to make but two files to reference it in. In some cases there are three filenames -> 1 portrait, 3 references.

For our Russian friends who want to help us  :the names of the people for whom there are no portraits should be clear from the list. There's a number, which doesn't matter, than the side on which the man was fighting (RED, WH1, WH2, etc) then his initials and then the name.
So, for 1002REDD.P. Parsky.mdl :

1002 - doesn't matter
RED - he was on the side of the Reds
D.P. Parsky - the name.

1645ANAN.A. Grigoriev.mdl
For "Anarchist Nikifor Ataman Grigoriev"???
He was not anarchist (but nowadays fascists say he was the true one) nor Green (even they were the sole sides he didn't attack, he was rejected from), he was an independant pogromist warchief. I'll say he must be White:
At first he was a tsarist officer, and after switching sides 6 times with almost all sides, having fought against these sides, he wanted to return to the Whites (he had fought against): Makhno's girlfriend shot him dead (many different accounts about Grig's end) and Makhno succeded in integrating his troops (which was proved looters, then fired)!

Azerbeijan call him "Səməd bəy Mehmandarov" with full name "Səməd bəy Sadıx bəy oğlu Mehmandarov" means "son of Səməd bəy"
"bəy" means like "Mister"

You are looking at Rus Graphics leader units?
Found portraits can have check near them. Is Barbu's list are done? I can look also.

No I also dont know much, just trying to find similarity in wording. as names are expressed as English translated letters, some pronunciation differences can result failure in google search. Even one letter can make difference. Ex:Igrash Bey. It is "sh" in middle but not sure. or "Ataman" it also looks like "Kazak" name.

Edit: Juna-Id-Khan, Kurshirmat, Oraz Sırdar not possible to find.

... and I have updated the list by placing in italics the names of those for whom we've got photos and also explaining where in this thread their photos are.

It's hard to say, really, but a quick look at the list tells me we've got a big problem with White leaders.

Quick Arm Mexican, can you write an explanation of what you do with each photo? Maybe those of us who dabble :bonk: with PaintNet or Photoshop can follow the instructions and help you get things done faster. Like what filters and effects you use...
