couple of good Soviet films on the revolution and civil war - both based in the Ukraine are Askoldov's 'The Commissar' and the Hungarian film maker, Miklos Jancso, "The Red and the White", both quite superb on the horrors and madness of the war. Both had long periods of being banned by the Soviet authorities.

If you're interested in the war and its aftermath in Central Asia, there is a large tradition of Soviet 'Easterns', often quite deliberately modelled on some of the motifs in the Hollywood westerns (some one betrays their comrades, realises their error, atones at the end etc), but the better ones really capture the sense of time and place. The USSR was still churning these out in 1991.

I have recently watched "The Admiral" but it was a bit Hollywood type movie though Elizaveta Boyarskaja was beautiful. :coeurs:

Don't know for certain. Soviet films with English subtitles most likely - yes, can be found on YouTube, for example. New films with subtitles - hardly, most likely have not yet done. Unless, there is a license with the English dubbing.

Corrected errors in the two my previous posts. :)

I watched "Lenin: The Train" this week on You Tube. It was made in the 1980s and had Ben Kingsley giving a quite good portrayal of Lenin and Timothy West as Dr Gelfand (Parvus). It tells the story of the "sealed train" provided by the Germans to get Lenin back into Russia in April 1917. Very enjoyable.

While I do not share the same theoretical positions as wsws with regard to the Soviet Union under the rule of the tyrant Stalin, I think they are basically on the money with this very disparaging review of what seems to be a disgraceful portrayal of Trotsky . . .

"The series is an exhibition of the political, intellectual and cultural depravity of all those involved in the sponsorship and production of this grotesque falsification of history."

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2017/1 ... e-n25.html

And here is a much calmer review from Israel that nevertheless still suggests that the series has anti-semitic intentions . .

I have no sympathy for Trotsky, but it's sure history is still bent by the tcheka, Putin, the red mafia which has taken power early 1918, few months after it was born (Dzerjinski said, after the initial saints, there was now only bandits in tcheka). It's like an other indirect suicide of Trotsky, victim of what he empowered.

What would be very interesting is, rather than the bolchevik revolution, how Trotsky went corrupt by Lenin.
Trotsky, 30 years after Bakunin critics on Marx, had seen that Lenin could become a stalin, but he however followed him.

Putin charge Trotsky for he wants all chiefs of Russia be untouched, the Tsar, Lenin, Stalin, Putin,..
while he says revolutions are bad, because Putin fears a revolution against himself.

Yes, Putin is every much an autocrat as the Tsar or Stalin so it suits him to malign the October Revolution. I found this 5-part series on the Russian Civil War on YouTube . . .
