I have been playing RUS for two or three months (not as much as I would have liked, I am afraid) and I still don't know what this symbol next to the unit counter means
Any ideas? It´s just curiosity.
Thanks in advance tovarichi

Makes sense, thank you very much (I had many options but not that, curiously, as and example I can tell that I thought it could mean "supplied unit" or "existing structure in the region"), I should quit vodka

...
Many thanks Cordell

What did you to get that icon?
Also can you post a better pic to identify it?
AFAIK you cannot entrench in RUS
Edit: yes, you can entrench in RUS

Then what would all those Tanks help for ?

According to the manual p.52
Tanks were few in number, and their use was very similar to the one they had on the Western Front during WW1:
They were used to disrupt and breach enemy fortified lines (i.e. trenches). Most of them were extremely slow and
prone to frequent mechanical breakdowns.
Tanks have a new attribute, called *Disrupter*: This gives the attacker a chance to breach the fortified lines of the
defender, i.e. to reduce the impact of the defender being in a fortified position (entrenched).
Also p.43
Entrenchments only appear as part of the initial scenario set-up or, in certain scenarios, by events. Players do not
construct entrenchments.

Yes , Nikel, good point.
But if you take a look at an after battle report you can see number of prisoners taken, number o routing units and, amongst many other topics, percentage of units entrenched for the battle, I guess it is a abstraction of holes, rocks, or natural barriers or any other ad hoc terrain protection the soldiers could take advantage of... in my opinion

AFAIK, units/stacks will "auto-entrench" by remaining stationary.
They will entrench up to the levels set by: (values from RUS, GameLogic.opt)
cbtMaxEntrenchLevel = 8 // Max absolute entrenching level
cbtMaxEntrenchNotArt = 4 // Max entrenching level, if the stack has no artillery (high levels don't benefits non artillery anyway)
See also:
http://www.ageod.net/agewiki/WIA_Manual#Entrenching
(In WIA, max entrench is 1, or 2 with artillery)

The auto entrench in not included in RUS manual, or at least cannot find it
Also it is said
Entrenchment levels are displayed graphically on the map, with Levels 5-8 being identified by a gun icon.
Entrenchments are eliminated once ALL units that occupy the entrenchment are moved out of the region. Friendly
Forces within the same region may occupy different levels of entrenchments
So the icon displayed is for 1-4 entrenching? Or is it a gun? Can you post a clearer pic?

Ah the joy of copy/paste! Verbage has been copied from the older manuals. This one probably needs checking.
(this is why we put WIA manual at Wiki, to fix as we go.... :w00t

There was a manual thread in the enthusiasm of the beginnings of RUS, but the manual was never updated, and will never be I guess

AFAIK you can not entrench eficiently in ROP and WIA. Max level is 2(3 if inside building)
In Rus I think max level is 4 even there is long range heavy artilery in the stack. (maybe can be increased to 8, if plausable historically? )

Values in my post 8 are from RUS:
Max 4 without arty, max 8 with arty

OK, thanks, an emplaced cannon
Also when entrenching happens another icon will appear above the units panel

Also in the battle report the same icon you posted

Post above edited, sorry for the misinformation

With 1 or 2 artillery (the second taken from de japanese in Vladivostok) units seems to be 4? Look the example above.
Also the emplaced canon icon is the gun for 5-8 entrenchment levels the manual refers to?

Thanks Nikel, it is clear now. That means entrenched unit.
Thank you all guys, that icon was a total mistery for me.

So it hasn't been there long enoughg to go higher?
Values I cited are directly from Settings folder of latest patch....
...maybe a bug if unit has been emplaced with artillery for long time...

I guess it is that, but the tooltip should say 8?
In AACW there is an icon for 1-4 levels, a soldier not a cannon

I think it is just a matter of the manual itself having confusingly inconsistent use of terminology for two different things:
I assumed it worked the same as Pride of Nations and indeed it seems to work the same way - forts are permanent fortifications set by the scenario or constructed by the player using various resources while entrenchments are just the troops digging themselves in automatically. Entrenchments have 4 levels, each successive one taking longer to build up to, and special additional levels 5-8 that can only arise where artillery is present and only affect artillery.
Tanks obviously negate some of that entrenchment bonus - I haven't seen tanks in the game yet.

There are two types of forts, fortified line and redoubt. I think fortified lines go in cities and redoubts in open terrain. They are built by artillery and supply units (6 and 8 elements according to the manual, though actual milage may vary). They are structures that are distinct from the entrenchment level of a unit. You can have bonuses from fortified lines and entrenchment.

Entrenchment level was max 4 as I usually sit one corps in Kazan whole year. Battle report showing as max 400 entrenchment with art.
I only saw 800 entrenchment while balts were defending red uprising and assault in their city . So max should be 4 or 8?

Should be 8 if the Group/Stack includes Artillery
Should be 4 if the Group/Stack is without artillery

In RUS, the max Entrenchment level is 4, even if you have arty in the stack !
You will find 8 level entrenchment in only few cases : when you activate the Special Options which transform some key-cities in "Verdun" like strongholds (e.g. Petrograd, Tsaritsyn, etc.), then the new garrison units which appear are with the level 8. So it means you can merge all other forces with inside (and especially arty if you want it to be efficient because all level between 4 and 8 concern artillery improvements like in AACW)

800 Entrenchment were in a baltic 'city'(if I remember correctly ) after red guards uprising during balts joining the war, before Red Verdun option working(Pre 1.3a patch). But I understand now the entrenchment levels. Thanks.

Could someone quickly tell me what are the max entrenchment levels (with and without artillery) for RUS / ROP and WIA. It is not clear in the thread.
I don't have access to the computer, and I would like to update my beginner AAR on that.
Thank you.

:cbtMaxEntrenchNotArt = 1
NCP
:cbtMaxEntrenchLevel = 2
:cbtMaxEntrenchNotArt = 1
RoP
:cbtMaxEntrenchLevel = 2
:cbtMaxEntrenchNotArt = 1
RUS
:cbtMaxEntrenchLevel = 8
:cbtMaxEntrenchNotArt = 4

No, for RUS it would be :
:cbtMaxEntrenchLevel = 4
:cbtMaxEntrenchNotArt = 4
But in some specific towns fortified when an option is activated, you will get there a stack with an entrenched level of 8.

In addition, even if the max level is - say - 4, the engine allows setups to have higher levels from start (even if such levels cannot later be reached).
In RUS for instance, even with a max at 4, we indeed have units that start on map with an 8 level entrench
