As the rebels, which I never play except in these tourneys, I plan to defend in depth. Burn, slash and delay the Union. I expect to retreat often. I build lots of militia and cheap 6,12lbrs. to aid in defending in depth, have the militia build up trenches and hold my rear areas against the US Cavalry which the US has in ample supply. I do move to defend the Union crossing the Miss against Vicksburgh as I know Grant cant do much from the West side by sailing my tiny Miss fleet back and forth between Baton Rouge and Vicksburg.

Messieurs,

Sirs,

In the course of the tournament I realized that I would have of make some PBEM highly-rated north ... :bonk:

At the beginning of part(party):

EST: I decide to remain careful, and I pay attention to keep(guard) my army most grouped together(most included) possible. My medium-term objective and to starve the troops enemy without looking for the fight.

Turn2 Comments:
Virginia:
Lee moves towards Richmond, Longstreet moves to Richmond while Jackson will hold Fredricksburg and offer battle. Lee is in position should a Union hook comes from Lynchburg. Jackson blows the depot at Freddyburg.

Tennessee:
Full pullback towards Chattanooga, blowing rail as we go.

Mississippi:
Gardiner, slowed by mud is engaged by Banks command, while not decisive, it appears Gardiner's Corp will not be able to retreat back towards Jackson and allow us to use Forney's Corps to fall back to Meridian.

West/Ark:
We see the Union troops are suffering due to supply shortages and bad weather.

Turn3 Comments:
Virginia:
We are positioned defensively, Jackson's Corp begins retreat south towards Petersburg, more rail smashing.

Tennessee:
Some advance Union cav brigrades and single militia are probing the towns between Corinth and Tennessee. We see Ord's command has begun to mass south of Corinth. The weather is good, so its likely they will head towards Meridian, as our forces here will now retreat over the river back to Chattanooga.

Missisippi:
Gardiner is near trapped, Butler/Banks are heading north towards Jackson trying to trap my forces around Vicksburg. Sherman strong Corps has arrived at Natchez. We decide to evacuate Vicksburg, blow the depot and gather near Jackson. Forney is sent back to Meridian we have gathered a few new militia regs. there to prepare to hold that crucial point.

West/Ark:
The undersupplied Union forces have enveloped Ft. Smith but their cohesion is very poor and we dont believe an assault will take place. We leave a reg. there and plan to march northward to hit Fayetteville to see if we can take that town and threaten their weak supply situation.

Disappointment at Meridian as Polk is unable to hold off Ord/McPherson on day1. Pemberton arrives to aid Meriidan and find Ord already there and with his huge army ready to deal maximum damage. Basically Polk's Corps is no more and Pemberton barely survives with a few battered arty batteries in his army. Big mistake, as I didnt expect such a large force under Ord's command and expected to jump into the trenches there but Ord was already there and our forces were cutup piecemeal. We lose thousands in the pursuit and retreat.
Gardiner is unable to disengage and escape Port Hudson, JJ doesnt march to Jackson to dislodge Butler as ordered but neither does his Corps mtsg to Gardiner... i guess his force stays because of Gardiner's Corps nearby, thats 2 turns now that JJ wont leave his position when given his marching orders. My Miss. force is getting the tar beaten out of it.

In Ark: Watie and Quantrill are able to storm Springfield Mo., perhaps Curtis's army will have to suffer more supply issues prior to any offensive. Hindman's div. abandons Ft. Smith and assaults Fayetteville, we are beaten back by a dug-in force under Sigel though.

Greetings,
Turn 7 Comments:
Time to get out of Richmond. Longstreet leaves after blowing the depot last turn and cuts rails and marches to Petersburg.
Gardiner is almost done near Vicksburg. We attempt to escape back towards AJohnston.
AJohnstone will finally give up on trying to attack/defend by mtsof next to Jackson and march southward. Our position in the Louisiana/Mississippi is completely breached.

Results:
Gardiner does get mauled but is intact still.
Richmond falls, I rue its loss.

Turn 8 Comments:

AJ finds a brigade on its way to NewOrleans and will march on NewOrleans, we have scouted it and a small deachment defends.
In Virginia, we hold Petersburg and Lee/Jackson are at Garysburg. Petersburg's depot will be blown this turn.

Results:
Hey, we take New Orleans, and its possible we can hold it too.
A big swing in morale for the rebs...hurrah!
A disturbing trend is the almost 2-1 losses the Confederate army is suffering from the battles, mostly due to actions in Mississippi.

Longstreet got hit by Meade before he could retreat from Petersburg.
Gregg hit Lexington NC with 6000 cav and took that depot.
JJ puts in a poor effort and loses New Orleans pretty easily, but our forces were extremely fatigued and Sherman outgunned us (a given). Even though our forces were outnumbered 3-1 they mostly retreated due to their poor cohesion.

Turn 10 Comments:
Virginia:
Longstreet, battered, heads southward while Jackson/Lee hold the line at Garysburg. Stuart will do the same, retreating towards Raleigh.

Tennessee:
Hardee will leave Chattanooga, it appears Rosecrans is planning to cutoff our Corps now that his depot is built at the harbour just across the river. We send Wheeler northward against Nashville, to hopefully cutoff Rosecrans supply, we have waited for this move, planned it for this exact moment and our plotted march will get us at Nashville on day15, with luck we will engage and take the town/depot while Rosecrans/Thomas marches southward after Hardee.

Mississippi:
Gardiner is beseiged, but MC remains so I break seige on defensive evade commands, his bleeding troops in constant retreats and will attempt to retreat eastward, while AJohnstone begins his death march northward from New Orleans. If Sherman moves against AJ, perhaps Gardiner will slip thru and be able to escape with his battered corps.
Polk reorgs some weak conscript regiments at Mobile but we only have a token force against the oncoming Union forces.

Overall:
We see a small advantage of VP's suddenly become a significant factor, plus we are further advanced on all fronts with the better casualty numbers...in all respects.
