two related books that taught me a lot about operational combat in the era are Wahro: Austro-Prussian and then Franco-Prussian Wars. Excellent, and you get a feel for how well PoN models that phase when armies were in a transition from the Napoleonic to 20C models of war.

Pakenham's Boer War will give you an insight into asymetric warfare - again something well modelled in the game.

Gat - 'A History of Military Thought' is a solid tome, that covers military thinking from the mid-17C onwards. He is particularly strong on the transition say 1820-1900. Also very interesting in the intersection of purely military thinking (and the struggle to cope with the implications of the rifle and longer ranged artillery) and social attitudes. Its pretty clear that German/Prussian doctrine by the 1890s was as much a product of a form of social darwinism as it was a reworking of Clauswitz.

Its just out of era, but a very good insight into late 19C diplomacy etc is Atwood's: Peacemakers. It studies the process of the peace of Verseilles and the other post-WW1 settlements but its very revealing about the mindsets and attitudes that led to WW1 in the first place.

Engels' excellent "Notes on the War" spring to mind. A series of essays on the Franco-Prussian War 1870-1871. Published in the Pall Mall Gazette. Here is a transcript.

agree, actually generally Engels was a very astute military commentator, so worth digging out his newspaper articles and some of his later short pamphlets as he seemed to often grasp the implications of technology and social changes on military options.

Perhaps you will also enjoy watching the classic BBC TV series, Fall of the Eagles

Classic means I, Claudius style.

Featuring Patrick Stewart as Lenin
