In any case, I can't build railroads there or otherwise improve the local development level. Historically it was possible to build infrastructures in foreign lands.

Interestingly, I can build railroads if I'm occupying the territory. So I may just have to declare war just to improve the country I'm invading.

I was getting a consistent sales score of .6+ but I got greedy and expanded my colonies. Now I'm back to .5+.

And inflation mysteriously shot up to 23%

make sure that relations are >20, that'll stop them taking your facilities. So a short campaign of using the diplomatic support option should do the business

Inflation - check there isn't a crisis or a one off event, usually you'll get an 'economic sunrise' event to bring it back under control

From what I have seen, it is affecting them as well. Most of the minor nations will eventually shut down, and burn every structure due to the riots and strikes. In Loki's AAR, for example, the Swiss never produced a single gram of coal in the mine he built there. They were always on strike. He ended up having to increase the contentment of the minor nations, which is what we had to do in our MP game as well.

This almost makes it seem like playing is kind of pointless. I wish I hadn't read this post.

Edit: How do you write an event that just affects minor countries? Or does everyone need a contentment boost?

so, creating event which will say, fire every 5 years and which give boost to contement for all minor nations, big enough to stop all riots. One of reasons why i was "forced" to annex persia was that i needed resources which were permanently on strike .

any hope to have themm in PoN gold ? and/or added some of most hard to find resources to nation which can produce them .

My solution was a bit brute force. I looked at the contentment for each and every minor region in the world. If they were on strike or rioting, or even demonstrating, I added 55%. In practice, you could change the number 55% to any number.

My computer crashed, so I lost the exact script, but a copy appears here(post 46). This script does not add to every region of the world, only the ones I choose (and not every region of a country).

just to add to this, apart from the damn Swiss, once I shifted to 'hard' all the other minors did pretty well in their economies. So it maybe that they need the small bonus that came from that setting.

Yes, if this game gets a gold version, this mechanic needs addressed.

People shouldn't tend toward rioting and lack of contentment so easily (particularly given the scarcity of luxury goods worldwide). I'd like to see a system where if you provide luxury goods people become much happier, if you provide common goods they remain content, and if you provide food, they don't revolt. And the reverse, of course. That way if you are feeding your people and giving them common goods, they don't riot. I think the AI and the average nation would have a much better chance of keeping things functioning.

If this game gets a gold version (or any other kind of version) it will be the third time I buy it. :coeurs:

Me too. Three times.
I bought the mac version (now unsupported, I think). Then, the steam version, and I will happily buy the gold one.
Not only is an amazing game. It is a game that allows me to do other things at the same time, like reading, answering email, etc. At the end, that "feature" makes me more willing to play PoN than other games I have (Ageod, Paradox and Civ series, mainly).

I can usually get PON to alt-tab, but not always. Sometimes it simply won't give up the screen. So this isn't really a "feature" for me either. Even if I could get it to alt-tab, they really need to increase the turn speed or the game will always be very marginal. Players just won't tolerate how hard this game is to play PLUS how slow it is, meaning it takes forever to see the results of your decisions and learn the game on the fly.

I'm also playing France, and had the same problem, with strikes & riots in many provinces.

After a few years playing, putting cavalry & some military police as advised to me ( see
http://www.ageod-forum.com/showthread.php?36538-Contentment-strikes-amp-contradictory-info ),
I now have 70% or more contentment in all but two provinces (Corsica, rioting since I couldn't
dedicate any military forces there, and Vosges, but it's getting better).

The year is 1864, and I've thus managed to get out of the so-called "death spiral".

My advice, henceforth : follow the councils given in the linked' post, and just wait for a few years.

The designers of this game really need to read some of the credible scholarship on the Second Empire.

I recommend:

http://www.amazon.com/Rise-Fall-Second-Empire-1852/dp/0521358566/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1415383469&sr=8-1&keywords=france+second+empire

http://www.amazon.com/French-Second-Empire-Political-European/dp/0521036321/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1415383477&sr=8-2&keywords=france+second+empire

http://www.amazon.com/Eug%C3%A9nie-Empress-Empire-Desmond-Seward-ebook/dp/B00DUBC7JI/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1415383485&sr=8-6&keywords=france+second+empire

This notion that it was an unstable, unpopular regime doomed to fail is laughable.

Edit: And, of course, since the designers are French, they could actually read a lot of the more in-depth histories that I only wish I could.
