Battle of Metz

The French launched a power attack into Metz. This was expected, but the reserve corp I sent in to reinforce an element of the 5th Army was not enough.

The siege of Maubeuge

The siege began well with the fortress being reduce after the initial bombardment. However, there was a garrison left to deal with.
I chose to send in a veteran corp to attack the fort. This is risky-even with a veteran unit.

East Front September 1914

The northern sector of the front is scantily held by German forces-help will arrive soon as multiple new armies are mobilized. Russian forces are bing quite agressive. The Russian 1st Army continues its advance on Koenigsberg.

Russian A/H Front

The A/H Army was in a position to continue the offense due to the Russians concentrating in the north. There were two successful battle; one at Kielce by involving the 1st A/H Army and at Crasnik. There was also a successful breakthrough battle at Lublin by the 4th Army.

October 1 1914

This map shows the changes that occurred during the September battles.

The A/H Army is doing fine, but Germany will need those new armies asap.

Battle of Crasnik

This was a major success in that reserves did not need to be committed-thus allowing the breakthrough battle.

Battle of Koenigsberg

The German corp left at Koenigsberg was not quite strong enough to stop the Russian 1st Army. However, the fortress has done well in holding out against repeated bombardments.

Siege of Posen

This is very bad news for Germany. For whatever reason (prior battle) the garrison left the fortress. The fortress surrendered.

I can't help but to wonder if the Russian (ai) is actually going to try to reach Berlin.

Armenian Front
Battle of Kars

The Turkish Army made another effort at taking Kars in September. This time it was successful, but still at a high price.

At the start of this battle the Ottoman Army has 5 full strength corps. At the end, there will be only 3 ready.

The Russian forces included some very good units-it was a "too close to call" battle.

Battle of Kars Results

You can see that this victory came at a price, but it was still a victory. Aside from any military reasons, Turkey must maintain pressure on Russia. If a year goes by without a major attack on Russia, Turkey will suffer from a moral loss.

October 1 1914

There is some question as to how to proceed with the western campaign. It seems unlikely that German forces can reach Paris, thus any further attempts in that direction is a waste. Perhaps it will be more prudent-and productive to turn away from Paris and capture the channel ports.

On the other hand, Paris is so close-and where is the French Army?

The main forces that defend the sector of Paris are the BEF and Vth and VIth French armies. I see you have damaged seriously the BEF and a the French Vth army is almost encircled.

So, being in your shoes, I'd try to reach Paris. In fact, with a bit of luck, if the German reinforcements on the East Front (Xth and XIIth armies) are enough to keep the pressure of Russians from Berlin, you have some chances to close the war "before the leaves fall".

You have done undoubtely much better than me in most of my matches: I see you are an expert of Schlieffen Plan, I must say!

Edit: AI could call also VIIth and VIIIth armies from the south of France, provided Italy is yet neutral... :neener:

I agree that a continued push on Paris is worth the risk at this point. However, I have seen the "empty" front before-can't count on that. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

The ai is noticeably sharper now. One very big improvement is in how it "knows" when to break off an attack-or to retreat. It is not suicidal as it once was.

Thanks for the comment on the Schlieffen Plan execution. In the old game I did run it through the first three months many times until I could achieve historical or better results. I knew there must be a way-and I found it. There are still many variables that can stall the plan-like in this attempt. although this time was not bad, the 1st and 2nd Armies could have been a province or two deeper into France. Its sort of irritating :) to have the 3rd and 4th Armies do too well, it drags you right into the middle of French reserves. Such goes the winds of war.

We shall see. I have not made any test runs with gold other than through the opening moves (early August). Each step is a new experience.

About the map-it is much improved IMO. On the eastern front I know right where I am at all the time without having to zoom out. The color and contrast are much easier on my eyes.

Great job Calvinus, and btw, I am keeping up with the patches. This aar will reflect the current state of the game.

Lass nicht die feindliche Slawen Berlin besiegen! (Don't let the fiendish Slavs capture Berlin!) Mach den 1870 Sieg fertig! (Finish the victory of 1870!)
And no, I'm not German. I learned it in high school. Since the top dogs at AGEod are French, I have a new idea... :p

Before getting into the new plans (no new ideas appeared here :) ) there are some political developments that are of some interest.

On the positive side, it looks like Bulgaria is very close to joining the cause.

On the negative side, Romania is teetering on joining the T.E. Diplomats had been sent there, but w/o any mission. Looks like they need some help.

Italy is remaining solidly neutral

at this time.

Techs have been fully engaged. The first one to be completed was airborne cameras.

I have a tech research advancement event, but I thought it best to save for 1915 when there will be more difficult techs to research.
