Fix for Missing Brest-Litovsk Fortress

Mon Mar 11, 2013 4:56 am

Thanks to Forum Member NY Rangers pointing out that the fortress of Brest-Litovsk is missing from the Campaign scenarios, find below a fix that restores the Fortress and its garrison Corps to the Russian OOB.

For those wishing to add a minor Fortress to the Belgian city of Namur as well as fixing the Brest forts use the file below instead:

The .zip files contain edited Fortress.csv and Nations.csv files and it's up to you if you wish to save the original file. Just drop whichever version you like into the Grand Campaign scenario folders and over write the originals.

If you are using a scenario installed with JSGME, deactivate the mod in use, apply the fix and reactivate the mod. These changes are for a new game but adding them should not break any saves.

For some background on this see here:

Brest-Litvosk Fix

Could I just add this file to your naval mod and then us JGSME and install both at once? Also, why the nations file in the Brest-Fortress fix? Lastly you reported a fix for colonial germans. Could this be put in with your navy mod? Kinda do all three in one mod!

Thanks

That's one way to do it. This is a fix rather than a Mod so copying the Fortress.csv file into the Grand Campaign scenario folders of the Stock game, overwriting the original Fortress.csv file will work as well. You can ignore the Nations.csv file in the .zip upload, it is unnecessary if you're only fixing the missing Brest-Litvosk fortress but is required if you wish to add the Belgian fortress at Namur.

The fix I uploaded earlier today should prevent the teleporting German colonial garrisons but it may need more testing than I gave it so I threw it out to the Community. If feedback indicates that it works I will redo my Naval mods and upload a new one-click-fixes-all file.

As a follow up to your Brest Liv fortress fix - the Warsaw fortress is also missing - take the "A" of the last use of Warsaw in the fortress.csv file to make this fortress active

Hi guys!

Here are a couple of forts that you missed:

fortresses.csv

The Gallipoli peninsula

SEDD-UL-BAHR to SED_UL_BAHR and Fort will active.

Austro-Russian border:

LUTSK to LUTZK and Fort will active.

I checked all the other forts in fortresses.csv (GC2 and GC4) and more errors in the file is not found.

Strange, applied Averkinen's fix to the 1915 scenario and the Lutzk fortress showed up as it should. Are you using any scenario mods?

Edit:

And it's time for another round of FIX the FORTRESSES!

TUR_Fort-Kum Kale;366030;Fort-Kum Kale;FT_MinorFortress;TUR;KUM KALE;;0;3;-;0;-;2;-

Similarly with jcrohio, although I do not use any mods. Strangely, though, I noticed that in this scenario very many forts is not, which were to be (especially in Russia).

Well, as soon as I have free time I will check each scenario for the presence of the forts, I hope I can fix all the flaws. :bonk:

Solved! (1915 scenario):

Nations.csv

Just find column Fortresses of RUS Tag and fix:

From:

566010;566020;566030;566040;566050;566060;566070;566080;566090;566100

To:

566010;566020;566030;566040;566050;566060;566070;566080;566090;566100;566110;566120;566130;566140;566150;566160;566170;566180 (no spaces) + fix Lutzk

And losted forts will appear (in Russia). :hat:

I suspect the reason perhaps may be that by the time the 1915 scenario starts, some of the "missing" Russian forts had already been demilitarized, their guns, ammunition and supply stocks distributed to the field forces. Either that or maybe the missing forts are already behind the Austro-German lines.

Check the Lutzk province even though the fortress symbol may not be present. I found that the Sedd-Ul-Bahr and Kum Kale fortress' graphics in the Grand Campaign scenario do not appear on the map but clicking on the province has both show up as fortresses in the Unit's Window. No idea whatsoever why this is.

All of the missing fortresses are minor fortresses - it would be nice if Calvinus would weigh in and tell us if this was a mistake or were all these fortresses meant to be deactivated in the 1915 scenario

That's right, buddy, I also think a little strange that the developers have made such a mistake in the construction of the script. But on the other hand, by January 1915, all the fortresses were still on the Russian side of the front, by the time the Germans had not yet started their "great offensive" and Russian troops are actively held their position in Poland and Galicia without fear of surrounding, so disband these fortresses still no sense + In the Russian State Archives, by 1915, all the fortresses still listed as active. Well, I hope Calvinus, will say something about it.

Hello, I remember that 1915 scenario was developed by Philippe Thibaut for the release of gold edition. So I don't know if this is a WAD or a mistake...

It's long ago since I designed this, but the reason it is removed was that I had sources showing the fortress was no longer active.

So,if I understand this right; None of the fixes here, including Brest-Litovsk fix, is not really needed as they were historically inactive?
I see that the Namur fortress can be added to make it a bit harder for the Germans although it is ahistorical.

Not sure if this is entirely accurate. The Brest Litvosk and Lustzk fortresses and Turkish forts at Gallipoli and Kum Kale seem to have been omitted unintentionally and due to minor typographical errors in the relevant Fortress.csv files.

The Belgian fortress at Namur certainly did exist and required deployment of the German siege train. However, it was never reinforced like Liege and provided little substantive resistance. It's omission from the game seems intentional but whether including it or not is ahistorical is probably a subjective decision for the Player. There are valid arguments for including it or not at the scale of WW1G.

The 1915 forts are a little more complex as the record seems ambiguous as to whether they were actually effective or not when the scenario starts. During the Great Retreat of 1915, a number of these named fortresses were abandoned virtually intact, in game terms they did not effectively exist. However the 1915 retreat occurs after the scenario begins so the absence of these forts goes some way to reproducing the events since they were abandoned largely due to incompetence organic to the War Ministry, STAVKA and the commands at Front and Army level. Adding them to the 1915 scenario may very well be considered ahistorical but it does provide for a reasonable "what if" situation. Norman Stone in The Eastern Front 1914-17 goes into some detail on the tremendous cost that giving up their fortified zones without a fight imposed on the Russian war effort. Unfortunately he deals mostly in generalities and omits the fates of specific fortresses.

That's my $0.02 CAD but I'm grateful to Averkinen and Jcrohio for correcting the typos and giving us options.

Thank you for a very enlightening answer. With this in mind I think I will put in the fixes, as you said some of them are typos from the devs.
As for the Namur you are right. I just misread my information.

Fortifications were already obsolescent in the Napoleonic wars and obsolete by the Franco-Prussian Wars; Graf Moltke said- "Build Railways not fortresses".
The russians were very fond of Fortress and wasted a lot of ammunition and artillery garrisoning them; so did Austria at Prezmysl (unpronounceable for me)

Conrad wanted to fight at his fort but Ludendorff and Falkenhyn advised against it and the retreat left the garrison surrounded which later surrendered.
Similarly in GREAT RETREAT several large forts surrendered with hardly a few shots fired.

The GERMANS understood the uselessness of fortifications and enormous costs involved in maintenance and upkeep.
Of course a few forts did prove useful- VERDUN etc..

But they impinged on strategic mobility and led to static fixed positions and lot of complications.

The Sedd-al-Bahr code above is very difficult to read. Is it change from SEDD-UL-BAHR to SED_UL_BAHR (losing a D)?

Re: Fix for Missing Brest-Litovsk Fortress

Hi. The text is difficult to read in part because it was posted in the old AGEOD forum and the original formatting, including the colour-coded amendments were lost when they transferred the threads to the new forum.

Also there are issues with the spelling within the game and while I had no issues correcting certain English language names (particularly ship names) there's no way that I can or could assess the validity of Arabic place names transliterated into English.

Fortress names may differ from the name of the map-area where they live.

The map area involved is SED_UL_BAHR (retaining the underscores in the Fortress.csv file) but for whatever reason the fortress name is Sedd-ul-Bahr and with the caveat that sometimes this forum introduces unwanted spaces the correct text should read:

TUR_Fort-Sedd-ul-Bahr;366020;Fort-Sedd-ul-Bahr;FT_MinorFortress;TUR;SED_UL_BAHR;;0;3;-;0;-;2;-

Be advised that for some reason Sedd-ul-Bahr and Kum-Kale do not appear on the map graphics but you can see them as fortresses when you select the appropriate map-area. Have no idea why this is and have never produced a fix.
