1.06h demo patch

Sat Sep 05, 2009 7:33 pm

I downloaded the new patch, and the game won't run. It says on line 52 there's an error.

On line 52 of which file? Something related to sounds & musics?
Are you sure the installation was successful? All music files have been installed properly?

If you open the Logs\LogError.txt file, you can see the list of game initialization errors, so included the music file that the game was not able to load?

Also, sound card incompatibility problems?

I'll download it again and reinstall and give you any info from the error logs.

Okay, just downloaded and installed the demo again. First off, no desktop shortcut and nothing in the 'all programs' tab in Windows. I go to the hard drive directory to start it and nothing....just a black screen. I've looked for an error file but there isn't one to be found. Sorry this is probably not very helpful what so ever. What else should I try?

Mmmh... strange! So it seems the installation did not work! Problems with the damned Windows Vista? UAC is disabled? :neener:

CarnageINC wrote:I go to the hard drive directory to start it and nothing....just a black screen.

Black screen = no DivX codec installed. Hit the ESC key, you should go to the start menu. Otherwise again, installation fault.

Try to disable sounds & musics (Configure Game), because I think you get the C++ error in line #54 because the sound engine fails in loading/initializing the sound/music files...

If the game does not run even with sounds & musics disabled, it means there's really an installation fault.

Edit: I checked the source code of the Sound Engine. There's no error check in any line #54. So please tell me what is the C++ source file whose line #54 is reported as error, otherwise I cannot help you... sorry!

Edit #2: the best way is to make a screenshot of the CTD message window and to post it here. ;)

This is after I removed in-game sounds and music.

>>I went into the configuration settings and saw that "in-game sounds" and music both =1. Does that mean they're both off or on? Either way, I tried to change it to 0 but my computer couldn't create the .ini file or something.

1 means activated.

The message box tells the game is practically unable to locate and open a file... so it means the installations is fault.

I will try to reproduce the problem, but I don't think it's a fault of the game... :(

You say "...but my computer couldn't create the .ini file or something"

Do you mean the WW1.ini file has not been updated/overwritten?

Don't you have read/write priviledges on the ww1 game directory?

This could explain the problem: the game fails the I/O operation because you don't have the I/O priviledges...

Anyway this should not happen under Windows XP.

I'm running Vista :bonk: . I guess I don't have read/write priveleges in the directory, which is dumb because it's Home Premium and I'M THE ONLY ONE WHO USES THE STUPID COMPUTER!!!! Anyway, how do I get around this?

Disable the damned UAC (User Account Control). You can do it from the Account management in the Control Panel.

Disabled UAC. Computer restarted. Re-disabled sound & music, enabled AI Logs & Memory. Got this.

Damn! Probably you have installed the game with UAC on, so that some file has not been copied..
So uninstall the demo and reinstall it from zero, with UAC off. I hope so it works... :feu:

Calvinus, my UAC is set for Comp. Admin. and I'm using XP. I just did a complete update of windows, audio and video drivers. I'm still coming up with the 'error 54' screen after a uninstall and reboot. Could it be hardware? I'm running NVIDA.

The error 54 in fopen.c file occurs when the game:
- is not able to find a file to be read, or
- is not able to open a file (because lacking of priviledges).

So I don't think the problem is caused by a hardware compatibility issue. :(

Have you tried on another PC?

I have. I've played this game on my old laptop (same OS, but 32-bit Vista instead of 64), and 2 desktop XPs. Do you think the problem could be that my computer runs Vista-64?

Uninstalled the game, disabled UAC, reinstalled the game, disabled sounds, still no dice. The only thing left is that I'm running Vista-64. This really sucks.

Vista 64??? You tell me only now??

The game is not built for the 64-bits version of Windows Vista.

But I remember somebody found a way to force the compatibily. Is somewhere any option for 32-bits application compatibility?

I put it in compatibility mode for XP-SP2. Still failed.

I must say this is quite the disappointment. Obviously this problem isn't that huge, but after reading in the tech section there are some install/operating flaws in the game.

Thanks Calvinus for your assistance and I do hope that Ageod can resolve these issues in a later patch.

I recently had a similar issue with HoI3. The game ran fine for me (really) until the last patch. After the patch, windows would close the game just as it was about to go to the map. It took a couple of hours to track down the problem (which others were experiencing too).

It turns out that the new patch has two files in it that some AV and anti spyware programs detect as a threat. Fortunately, my spyware program keeps a back up of its "cleaned" files. I was able to restore the robbed files to their rightful place and the game played again.

As it is doubtful that repeated reinstalls were corrupted. Something is happening to the game file during or immediately after it is install.

You can test this by turning off AV and spyware programs during your install. That UAC stuff can go too. Hopefully your game will run-if it does, then it is a matter of finding what file is viewed as a security threat.

Good luck.

Well, following the post of 06 Maestro, and assuming there could be one or more files in the demo patch that are considered as threat by the AV, I did so:
- I built a new Full Demo Installer, latest official version 1.06H, and I sent it to Philippe
- Philippe will publish this new Installer as soon as possible (the ftp server is now down, so we have to wait, sorry).

I hope the Full Demo Installer will work.

Unfortunately, the problems reported in the Tech forum are not related to the Install problems reported here... :(
That guy is suffering a incompatibility issue with the graphic engine of the game. The graphic files are fully read by the game, but the graphic engine cannot handle the multi-state feature of button bitmaps... :(
