Recon in Army-by-Army Mode

Sun Feb 22, 2009 3:54 pm

How the heck do I get my GHQs to do their recons earlier in the turn BEFORE I have actually moved most of my armies?

I'm playing a turn right now where I've got the German West GHQ, the Italian, the Austrian, and the E Germ all set to do recon. I've moved several armies on each front, but still no recon mission.

The recon missions are performed right after battles, aerial duel if any, otherwise battles.

So basically, if I want to benefit from recon during the present turn, I need to assign an army as main, move it so that at least on battle ensues, and set the GHQ for recon, wait till the battle completes, and hope that the recon gets executed?

Or does it not have to be the main army to get the GHQ to do recon? I know you can only move the GHQ with the main army, but what about recon?

Assuming I still have armies to move after that first set of battles+recon, and that my recon succeeds, I could then benefit from the recon during the rest of turn.

I think that this is unnecessarily limiting of the recon function, and takes away from the otherwise well-orchestrated engine that very nicely simulates real challenges of theatre scale command-and-control.

I'd like to suggest that this be changed in the game engine.

Why would I need to engage in a battle in order to engage in recon? Perhaps having forces moving around, or engaging in battle while the recon command is activated might give a bonus to recon, but making it happen only after at least one battle does not seem right.

It would also be nice if you could move the GHQ without having to either move another army that is assigned as "main" or else burn a move by assigning one to main and then leaving it stationary. As the supreme unit on the front, I'd think the GHQ could move whenever and whereever it wants if it is friendly territory, and perhaps even for enemy territory.

One last thing, it seems to me it would be neat if you could tell your GHQ to move to ANY tile you control, then tell it do do recon: maybe it succeeds or not, and maybe if you had it coordinated with some other armies that were also moving around or engaging in battle that could give a bonus to recon, and THEN be able to plan all the moves for your front. Then, after the GHQ has relocated and done any recon, it should ALSO be eligible to move in unison with the main army in an offensive. In effect, I think the GHQ should get one free move, plus the recon ability before battles.

The way it is set up right now, it seems that recon is predisposed to come later in the turn/month in that: the more battles and moves there are, the more likely recon will occur. I just don't see the realism in that and moreover, it short-changes the fundamental purpose of the army-by-army engine, which is to force the player to plan intricate (and potentially failed or disastrous) coordinated movements by a number of different large groups across an entire front.

Also, one more suggestion: an Event, something like "Coordinated Arms" that would allow Independent detachments to move in coordination with ANY active army during that turn. What would almost be neat is if you could expend some resource (maybe some money and NW) to be able to do this periodically (as long as you were not losing lets say).

Ops... maybe I was not enough clear and you misunderstood me.

The aerial missions are performed after the battles, if any battle is fought. But missions are performed anyway if no battle is fought. Making the test after aerial battles is mandatory because the result of aerial dues is determinant for such missions.
