Campaign Completed

Sat Dec 27, 2008 11:45 am

I've just managed to complete a campaign game as Entente - some thoughts.

Using latest patch, I seemed to have quite a lot of lock ups, usually these happened in the Military phase as the battles began. Actually I found that if I saved the game before entering this phase, a re-boot and loading the saved game cleared the blocks and I was able to play on.

Events - I would echo the comments made in the thread on this issue, no doubt this area will be looked at.

Diplomacy - some odd things here. For example, I could never get a Russian Amb. to Bulgaria. Also on several occasions, my Ambassadors were prevented from undertaking missions with the explanation that zero amb. could not do so. These were each time amb. with a real value and no other missions had been attempted.

Air - didn't try any air missions at all in view of possible bug.

Naval - absolutely no idea of what I was doing - not unusual. There are a number of possible formations and buttons relating to different strategies, the value of which is not clear, at least to me. I delegated combat to the AI which seemed to perform very well.

Supply - still unclear of how the rules work. Several times I was able to cut off and isolate both Turkish and German units. They were not always marked as such.

Major battles - at some point during these battles, I became unable to assign units to one or other flank - I assume that this was because I had either won or lost the battle on that flank, however, there is no indication one way or another. I have to say that I really like the way the battles are done I managed to get terribly over-excited during crucial encounters :)

What has become clear to me is that, whilst my military strategy is not bad, my grasp of Diplomacy, Research, Politics and Economy is abysmal. Learned theses on these areas would be very welcome.

Overall, despite some frustration, this is a great game - it's addictive, I even sneaked away to play a couple of turns on Xmas day - how sad is that :D

Thanks for the observations. :)

There is an indication for a won sub-battle of a major battle however. An icon appears, if you hover your mouse over it, the tooltip say that the battle was won.

I downloaded the demo to see how well it would run on my old system (Athlon 3000XP, 1 Gig Ram, and a vanilla Nvidia 6800 128 Mb card). Surprisingly the results have been much better than I anticipated. I'm at March 1915 as CP and have had only one crash earlier in the game as I tried to save and quit at same time. Scrolling is a bit slow but no gamebreaker. I'm also lost regarding many aspects of the game but have picked up many gameplay tips through the forum. Overall, great potential w/ this game (for me) after manual is out and another couple of patchs

Yes I found exactly the same thing happening in my games.

You're right - silly me, I'd missed that although the tooltip appeared when I hovered over the terrain effect icon :)

Following on from the Diplomacy comment above, in my new game, France was prevented from appointing an Amb. to Italy because there was no valid path. I saved the game there. When I reloaded I was then able to make the appointment  .
