Some confusing observations from a noob

Fri Dec 05, 2008 7:49 pm

Interesting game but some things confuse me.

Started a Grand Campaigh (4-player) as France; I didn't want to control more than 1 nation as a noob, so didn't go for the 2-player.

1) At Start an event popped up (Britain sends ships to Turkey). Now it had the French flag on it and I could choose the two options. First time round it 'timed out' and the AI (British I suppose) chose the option (keep them) - but in the text window it came up 'France: blah blah blah. As a test I restarted and quickly chose the option send them and it worked. Should I be able to do this?

2) Warplans and The Events: In the list of 11 events that came up, it included 'Kerensky', 'Bolo Pasha' and erm, 'some German dude.' The text for the German dude stated a bonus to Germany and the text for Bolo suggests a good bonus to take, but the historical text states he was a traitor to France. Obviously these events are 'picked' at random, but how is a player supposed to know which events he shouldn't take?

3) Diplomacy. Utterly confused to high buggery on this one. Haven't a clue. I see in the text window that lots of diplomats are being sent by the AI. (indeed, just in the three lines of the window I can see, I see that Germany has sent 2). However the manual (paper manual included with boxed set) states I can only send 1. However, I send all the diplomats I have (including the 0 ones). I can only send them out, I cannot do anything with them (the non-0 ones that is, as they all start off in France). So I sent the level 2 dip to ITA and the 2 level 1s to TUR and GBR and send the 0's out to USA, CHI and somewhere else I think. I can not do anything with them, so I end turn. Then a list of pop-ups with what has happened in the phase which seems to suggest the AI could do missions or something? Anyway, it seems the dip phase isn't over so I have a look at the dip screen again. I have a level 0 in USA and CHI and thats it. What happened to my other diplomats I sent? I didn't see any message on ITA views change and my Ambassadors seem to have been murdered on route with the looks of it. I have some more level 0's in France so send them off and end-turn. This time we head to the Military phase.

I don't know if I achieved anything, if my disappearing diplomats had any impact or why they disappeared in the first place. All very confusing.

Looks like a good game though. Pleasantly surprised to hear the strains of the bagpipes at one point.

Actually, it was a mistake to start the 4-player game as a noob. Not only it is much less stable in SP than the 2 players one, it is actually HARDER to get a grip on things if you are not controlling an entire alliance.

1) UK is by game terms neutral and thus inactive when that event pops up. So, France makes the call on that.

2) When you click on an event in the event selection window, you get a short description.

3) Please check the stickied thread where snippets of the in-production full manual are posted. One of them, IIRC, details diplomacy. Once you understand its nuances, it becomes a fun mini-game :)
