Grand offensive

Mon Nov 24, 2008 2:23 pm

Has anyone figured out how the Grand Offensive works? Any ideas or tips would be appreciated.

What do you want to know, the tool tips are quite comprehensive?

Actually I discovered today the way to launch a grand offensive. You hit the second right most mini button in the top menu bar (combat doctrine).

You maneuver your armies in position. Then you select the armies, the target and the options in the grand offensive planning screen. After that you move your armies in on the target and a corresponding grand offensive resolution window with some further combat options precedes the battle. The grand offensive continues over several months and you have to achieve a deceisive victory or face the consequences, substantial national will loss.

Thats my humble understanding yet

I'm still lost. When I pull up this screen it doesn't have the correct armies I want to move. And it says something about not being able to attack minor, but I'm trying to target a hex in France.

I know this is an important part old the game. So could somebody please give me a bit more detail on how to do this.

Thanks!

Before hitting the mini button you have to choose an army that will take part at the grand offensive. If you hit now the mini button you see the surrounding area of this army in a new window for planning your offensive.

You're better off than me. I didn't even know there was a grand offensive feature. We need a manual.

For the record, I'm very impressed and optimistic about this game. Just needs some polish.

And a manual.

The last thing to add is that the grand offensive must be planned in the Jan-Feb turn. In my game I followed your advice, but at show time when I attacked with my designated army, I never got the grand offensive resolution window even though I had chosen an option (combined gas attack). The attack was successful so I should not complain.

How does one research combat doctrines?

I think the warfare doctrine click to get to grand offensives need to be clear on what is possible give the turn.

If it's the Jan-Feb planning turn (non 1914?) it will allow full functionality to schedule grand offensive.

If it is NOT a Jan-Feb turn, it should be clear with UI you can view current grand offensive and not modify anything.

I believe I was in the grand offensive area in a non Jan-Feb turn and it confused the heck out of me!

Anybody else agree??

So let me get this right - I need to prepare for the offensive in Jan-Feb and then launch it during the month that I indicated right? (or is that month supposed to be the time limit of the Grand offensive?)

Secondly I rarely get to firepower whatever in January 1915. In the current game I'm playing, I'm still in transition to trenches. So that basically precludes me from launching an Grand offensive, right?

BTW how does one get to the firepower...? Through research? What sort of research?

Hope I'm on the right track... :bonk:

You need to prepare your grand offensives during the Jan-Feb turn. The month that you select is the month that you will launch the attack. You wioll notioce that there is a button to delay the attack if you need more time.

In my game I also did not get to firepower in Jan-Feb 1915. As the game is still in movement mode with no penalties, there is no need for a grand offensive.

In Jan-Feb 1916 I was in firepower mode and I did plan a grand offensive, but it did not seem to work. The attack was successful, but I never got the bombardment options screen beforehand. It is now Jan-Feb 1917 and I am definitely in the trenches and have planned a grand offensive.

I am not sure how you get to firpower, but I know that the trenches start with getting the trench mortar B technology.

Hopefully everything will work out in May 1917.

Please note that you can plan Grand Offensive in any turn, not only in Jan-Feb. ;)

Really, wow. But the soonest you can plan one in the 1914 campaign is in jan-feb 1915? Correct? If not, please shoot me now :bonk: .

The Tool Tip for Grand Offensives needs to be corrected: 'At start of each year, each camp may program one grand Offensive, on a fixed date and against a specified target, with more time (10 moves)'. I based my statement on this.

What do you mean by the last part... 'with more time (10 moves)'???

I am just quoting from the tool tip for Grand Offensives. What the tooltip is refering to is that normal offensives in the time of trenches are limited to 7 turns. With Grand Offensives this is increased to 10 turns.

I'm still not getting this right...

August 1914, Plan Conrad.

There are several Austrian armies with red flags up (I have also tried this giving the armies move orders so they have green flags up, and then planned the Offensive).

I choose one, press the tactical doctrine button and get the Grand Offensive screen up.

Select an army on this map - or more than one in some views. Each army now has a green arrow pointing to it.

Select a month from the timeline list.

But I can't click on any regions in enemy territory, "minor powers cannot plan Grand Offensives" or a similar message. None of the buttons on the planning screen do anything.

Where am I going wrong?

I do not believe that you can plan Grand Offensives in August 1914. Mainly, because there is no need for GO's until the concept of firepower which leads to trench warfare makes attacking so expensive. The firepower concept kicks in around end 1914 or start 1915.

Just attack in August and do not worry about GO's.

Le Ricain is right. In theory, I should totally disable the GO button in 1914... :D Do you agree?? ;)

Anyway, I'm going to do a deep double-check of all GO tests, mainly for those points that concern the NW effects.

Access to the GO window is now forbidden in Movement War.

Also, I fixed some nasty bugs in GO checks:
- wrong determination of suitable targets in Combined Doctrine
- wrong application of NW effects

Thanks,
Calvinus.

A slightly different problem with the Grand Offensive - how do I get rid of a successful one?!
I had a GO in the West from middle till the end of 1915, but now I am in March/April 1916 and can't order a new one. All I see is the red arrow on the target area of the previous offensive with the note that the offensive was a success. The Stop/Abondon Plan button is inactive and I can't plan a new one

So how can we plan 2 offensives as the Ottoman Empire? There is a requirement that if they don't launch 2 GOs, they will lose NW etc

It was already the end of the year and I'd love to have the additional features available for a new attack in this year - especially as I assigned only one army to the last one :bonk:
