Help On Sieges

Tue Nov 18, 2008 10:26 pm

By the way this game must have been an enormous undertaking. I'm a developer and can see the detail.

I'm a bit confused on sieges as I'm trying to figure out the following:

a) how do I bombard and then do a siege test? I've seen the battle AI do it when I activate it. Would like to reduce the fortress with some arty.

b) can you reduce fortress with any type of artillery?

c) What exactly does delay siege do?

d) Are there posted somewhere the calculations for siege test? So i can see what my odds are before I decide?

e) Any advice of sieges would be much appreciated!

I look forward to more patches.

ONE MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT:

The in-action battle results are very poor. Sometimes the messages appear on top of each other and I can't read either message. Also, the messages like 'Out of Action', 'Disrupted', etc. seem to be all over the place and it's hard to tell what is going on.

KEEP IN MIND: this action in the battles is like a climax to us gamers, so it should show the information very nicely and give us some good feedback. It's very ant-climactic to see these current results.

The final results are nice, but I can't tell who actually won the battle sometimes, unless winner is always on the left side???

Also, the drag and drop is not so nice when moving units long distances by rail. Wish we could just click some sort of entrain and de-train button for the interface.

I have much to learn and will try and give more feedback.

Oh one more important thing. I REALLY don't like the map orientation, my GOD could it not be north south. For the love of all that is proper, please make this north south as I'm going blind trying to change all the geography I'm had/seen since I was a child. My brain is starting to hurt... :bonk:

Keep in mind that it has been night for many of the potential repliers; in fact, it's still nighttime for a good deal of them :)

When you first look at the siege battle screen you find three small icons under the binocular: Besiege, Bombard and Assault

Yes but Heavy Artillery is only half so effective as coastal or siege artillery.

You stop the siege during this turn and can try it next turn again. It´s handy to send more artillery to the province for example.

You can see all formulas in the Modding/DBs folder. Here are the corresponding files for sieges:

You can also look in the boardgame rules. Page 26-27 of the Basic Rules Booklet describes the Siege procedure.

Yes, but when I try and bombard first it doesn't let me pick a unit or place one. An I hit engage and it just leaves the battle and puts the zeros for results.

Normal procedure... You have to drag and drop units only when you launch an Assault. In such a case, you can indeed select an infantry unit (never cavalries) and one artillery for support.

In fact, when you perform a Bombardment, you use instead all your artilleries! ;)

This is done automatically. You don´t need to arrange your troops. Click on Bombard and then Engage and the Bombard resolution will begin.

I could swear that it didn't bombard the few times I had done it. YES, I did have arty in the rear areas.

how does one use artillery in battles? I try to deploy artillery pieces to the front lines as "support" troops, but I am not allowed to do that. Does the artillery have any effect on battles if it is deployed to the rear?
