Breakthrough.. How ???

Tue Nov 11, 2008 6:50 pm

Hello again
I really tried hard to think I missed stg with Breakthroughs, but I now believe stg is .. broken :neener: !
In all battles I played , in Serbia and Tannenberg scenarios (playing Central - I still didn't tackle the big campaigns), I never could select any regions in the breakthrough subscreen... Everything seems in order, but no amount of clicking select anything. The only time it worked was for the tutorial (but you lose the fight !)
I have checked that I was attacker, had reserves, I think weather was fine (Aug 14..), what did I miss ?? :bonk:

The first round of combat you can't select any areas even though the Breakthrough button is active (or at least I've never been able to).

After that I think it depends on if you have won a round(?) I have achieved breakthroughs in both those scenarios but I really couldn't tell you the specifics of why. I just click the Breakthrough button each round and sometimes the areas are lighter colored (presumably after you've won a round) and you can select them other times they are not.

Not a very helpful explanation, but it does seem to work so I don't think it's broken, I just don't fully understand the specifics of it ;-)

You need to have units in the Reserve to perform the breakthrough with, and your general needs to pass his test. You can also play a Breakthrough event if you want to make sure. :)

Errr, in Tannenberg scen I have a Breakthrough event ..still nada !
And the test shouldn't prevent from choosing a breakthrough region, does it ? (it'll be a very weird implementation choice !)

Breakthrough events? How do you know you have those and use them?
Must have missed that in the 'mini' manual... Guess that's what happens when you read the manual days before you actually get to play the game :)

At the bottom left part of the screen, below the info window, you may see these small white-grey cards peeking from below the screen. :D Those are your events. Each card has an icon in the middle of it representing the nature of the even (espionage, political, battle, etc.), and this icon is greyed out if you cant play it in the current phase, and black if you can. Play the battle event at the start of the battle.

Aaaah... Thank you, Tamas. I clicked on one once and nothing happened (must have been greyed out) so I just thought it was there to make the interface more beautiful and never checked it again :)
