Version question

Wed Jul 08, 2009 7:57 pm

I am really confused now. What is the current version of WIA? I keep having problems with my PBEM game because my opponent constantly is on a different version from me. We started the game on v. 1.04. Then there was the problem with the missing links between the regions on Lake George, which was supposed to be fixed with 1.05, but that patch was reported to have problems, so we waited for two months ... then we continued to game, but were on different versions because my opponent had meanwhile installed 1.05, and I hadn't. So the game crashed on me. I installed 1.05, it totally wrecked my game. I reinstalled it, and reapplied the patch. We were fine for a single turn, then the game started crashing on me again. Now I am on a version that identifies itself as "1.05RC2" (what's RC2 mean?), but my opponent now advises me to install a patch located here ...

Link removed

that identifies itself as "RC4"! Why is this so difficult? What is the actual current version? And is this an official patch? I am sort of losing patience ... :bonk:

Hi

The 1.05 patches are only beta and supposedly non public betas so i don't know how you opponent have access to them unless he is a betatester.
A 1.05 beta public patch was posted for some hours, but removed because of problems. Ther has been no other 1.05 public beta patches since then for what i know.
Lodilefty is still working on a public beta release of the 1.05 patch that will hopefully be released soon.
Until them i will stick with the latest official patch: 1.04c
And of course, make sure you and your opponent use the same patch. :bonk:
Cheers
PS: RC means "Release candidate". Like a subversion of a beta patch with some changes regarding previous RC versions.

PS2: The 1.05 patch release has been delayed because of real life difficulties of WIA coordinator, Lodilefty (sick wife) :(
But things are straightening up lately! Don't despair! :)

Cheers

Hm , this beta patch was never published here as I have the last (bugged) 1.05 patch that was RC2
See screen here:
Image

Also by downloading the patch you provided, the last changes in it are from 18.06. which is almost two months when the last public beta patch was posted on the WiA forum.
So where did this guy got this patch and how come can a third party site post patches BEFORE they are on the official site ?
This is only creating a lot of unnecessary mess

That was my thinking ... at least *I* am now in a mess that from *my* point of view was certainly unnecessary. :bonk:

Indeed! I am trying to. But each time I think I have caught up with him and we're on the same page, he turns out to be one further step ahead of me next turn at the latest. Like Achill and the turtle. :grr:

No, 'just' the WIA coordinator ;)

I'd say you're missing the best part. But maybe that's just me. :)

Personally I haven't played a single turn of any game against the computer in the past eight years or so ... ever since I discovered PBEM. I have however played about 500 to 600 (rough guess) games PBEM (mostly Battleground and HPS, TOAW, and since about 2006 the Ageod games). Why fight a computer when you can compete with a real human brain? Fight a guy with thoughts and ideas, somebody who has strategies, deceives (or is deceived), sets traps (or falls for them), can be brilliant, or at times dumb, but always surprising, and besides, who talks? Nothing ever feels like war unless you fight a human.

Just my € .02. :D

Well, my opponent and I have agreed to wait on the official 1.05 patch. Just one more question: Having already installed that unofficial "RC2" version, can I just install the official patch on top of it, or do I have to go back to 1.04? And if, then how? Thanks. :)

Safest way =
 • uninstall WIA [copy saved games to somewhere if you need them]
 • delete Wars in America folder [this is why you copy saved games  ]
 • Install original setup
 • Patch to 1.04
 • Copy saved games back [see? I told you!! :D ]

It sometimes can work to just run older patch, but that is risky, especially with beta RC patches installed. 'Stray files' can cause havov
