Cohesion question

Goodaye,

Having been inspired by the 1815 AAR I bought the game. After playing it a while and reading the manual several times I'm uncertain about the effects of cohesion on combat operations.

From what I gather cohesion only affects Morale checks in combat. Is this correct? And if so, is somebody able to quantify what high or low levels of cohesion do for your morale checks?

Love the game, the map, the 'immersion' and especially the hardened attrition rules. Well done AEGOD.

Cohesion is essentially a units 'readiness' for combat. It is an abstraction, but it has a huge bearing on the combat strength of a unit.

Your cohesion takes hits in battle just like your strength does. I believe that it is checked against to determine if a unit routs. The inner math of this game will make your head swim... Keep an eye on the modifiers to cohesion gain/loss in the manual and watch your movements carefully and you will get a good grip on it.

Goodaye,

Thanks for the reply. So to summarise my units cohesion takes hits in combat and this is then reflected in their morale checks. Fail a morale check and it's head for the hills time.

I'd appreciate it if somebody is able to quantify it.

Eg. If I've a unit with a maximum cohesion of 60 and it's sitting at half strength, 30, due to a march through the wilderness is it worth my while throwing it straight into combat against a weakly defended outpost or would I be better to rest it and take the chance that the outpost is reinforced in the meantime?

As cohesion appears to be a significant factor in combat resolution could one of the moderators be kind enough to post the cohesion / morale algorithim or at least describe the parameters?

I don't think it is that easy.
There tons of values, modifiers, different situations, dice rolls involved, leaders and units especial abilities...
The system does not work with a CRT like the boardgames. Under the hood, the battle resolutions algorithms are very complex.
After playing a battle on game, check the Logs folder on your intallation folder and look for a Battlelog file. You can open it with notepad and see in detail all that has happened on the last turns battle.
Maybe there you find what you are lookin for.

Goodaye,

Thanks for the heads up on the battlelog file. I've found it very informative and useful. However there is an awful lot going on that it doesn't show, for instance morale checks.

I'm sure that a less abreviated and more comprehensive version is available, probably via the games debugger console. Is the ability to switch this on secret developers business or can we mere mortals participate?

Goodaye,

I've figured out how to do it. If you switch on error logging in Options under System then your battles logs become a lot more detailed and comprehensive giving you pretty much everything. Very useful.

Thought I'd pass that on for anyone else who was thinking along the same lines.

Great game.
