BOA2 – Feature focus : # 4 Special Orders

Specials Orders in BOA2 are the tools provided to the player in order to finely adjust how armies and fleets interact with the map or the enemy.

Not all are available at all times, as many are contextual to army location (e.g. build something), commander ability (e.g. if he is activated), or need to be triggered by a special unit or a specific condition (e.g. promoting a general).

Here is the list of orders which will be available. Don't hesitate to ask questions!

Image Ambush: Irregular units like partisans, indians, rangers and raiders can try to set an ambush in wild, hilly or forested regions. If they succeed they will have great combat benefits against an enemy entering the region, including first fire and the possibility to retreat easily.

Image Forced March: Forced march allows the force to move at a faster pace, but stragglers will result in a loss of combat potential. Good leaders and light units are more able to succeed.

Image Shelter in structure (when movement end): The force will enter the structure (city or fort) in the region where they end their move. Useful when you want to garrison a structure with a force away from it at the start of the turn.

Image Make a (conditional) sortie: Your force is currently within a besieged fort or city. By ordering a sortie, it will join any combat initiated by a relief force outside the structure.

Image Naval Bombardment: Your fleet has some bombardment capacity and will bombard the first coastal structure or entrenched position they encounter, provided you also have a force in the target region (support bombardment only). The enemy can retaliate in force if he has emplaced batteries (beware entrenched guns!).

Image Build a depot: The force will build a depot by expending two supply units.

Image Destroy Depot : The force will destroy the depot in their location.

Image Build a Fortification: The force will build a fortification network by expending two supply units and two artillery units.

Image Destroy Fortification: The force will destroy the fortification in the region.

Image Promote a leader:
The leader has gained enough seniority to be eligible for promotion to a new rank.

ImageImage Evade combat (land or naval): the force is trying to escape fight in traveled regions. The chances are based on the Evasion value you have compared to the Patrol value your enemy has in the regions.

Image Disband unit / Spike the Guns : The unit will be disbanded or destroyed (for artilleries or supplies) and the troops will be disbanded. Be careful: disbanding a leader will send him to retirement!

Image Distant unload: Order your naval unit to sail to a coastal region and unload troops in the same turn.

These last two are a MUST!

No need to reinvent the wheel, especially when it is rolling well :)

Please note that the last 4 are new compared to BOA1, and that the last 2 are completely new and were asked many time by players. You can now disband units (militia but also captured guns that your irregulars managed to get)!, so it opens new tactics of interest.

As for distant unload, it will come handy for some British landing in the rear of French Canada or along the coast of those rebellious colonies.

Wow! The new enhancements look great. I think BOA2 will be even better than the original. I can’t wait until it is available to purchase. :coeurs:

A few questions and comments about these enhancements:

Evade Fight I think this will be great when I am using unescorted transports to move troops and supplies around given the fog of war.

Disband Unit / Spike the Guns would this affect the number of units available in a geographic area using autorise command if I disband a militia in December? Can I disband a badly weakened unit and expect to receive a full unit in full health under autorise? :sourcil:

Distant Unload will there be the chance of suffering landing casualties in an event similar to what can happen during a harsh winter?

Keep up the great work!

Yes disband militia can help you recruit newer troops indeed.

Distant unload is following the standard landing rule, this is not an abstract projection of your land force.

So that explains it! :cwboy:
I thought it was a new 'pillage region' command. Couldn't find the warriors next turn.... :bonk: :siffle:

Leader retirement is possible only when no commandment chain is in place Arsan :niark:

No hope for McClellan :fleb:

you would anyway pay at least double cost. You are relegating him, don't forget. Don't expect him to be happy.

I just want him dead! :king: :niark:

Then... will we have distant unloading and spike guns/burn wagons in ACW/NCP sometime in the future?? :innocent:

Indeed (the disband and distance unload buttons)! Great stuff, though wish these could be retrofitted to NCP - maybe in a new patch?

I never really understood, why they make boxed versions at all....for the dial-up users? :)

Isn't commercially more profitable and cheaper for customers to have DL copies?

And what's this all about the boxed versions, box....isn't it possible for AgeOD to phisically ship the mere CD with the pdf manual version to solve it with dial-up users who can't scrounge wi-fi from Starbucks? :)

Just my silly questions on the whys for a DEV house. :)

For retail distribution for example :siffle:

I believe, having witnessed how Best Buy hasn't got AACW in USA that retail would work much better and with minimal expenses on the company side by cutting out the retailers and selling the game directly from the web.

For example, associating with the matrix is a good idea bc u catch a lot of wargamers coming from other titles...but i think if you can agree with a cd/dvd printing company, you can honestly earn much much more by just taking on the shipping PERSONALLY (internal to the DEV house).

An example of this policy is with America's Army Ops shooter game...game for kids when compared to ArmA :) but of course...they are associated to fans who burn and send for free (just the cd/dvd expense to be refunded).

I know, due to partnership, the guys who do print the AAO dvd and use the same policy (they are of course paid by the U.S. Army to do that) and i think such an agreement could be found for AgeOD.

However...i still believe that managing printing -> shipping from the insides would be the equivalent as potential profit for AgeOD to the DL versions they sell from their website.

I would like to know Phil's opinion about this but it's just my personal curiosity on WHY no dev company ever did something like this and preferred to sub/lease their profits to the publishers. Really, just i don't understand why, has anyone ever tried?

IMHO, it is too easy to get into a 'disaster' if you try to do something outside your area of expertise. Adding the managament of production, order processing, billing, distribution etc. is too often underestimated, and too often 'crashes' when not properly designed and resourced.....

If AGEOD wants to bring this 'in-house', it is a serious investment in time, money and resources. IMHO, it's cheaper and smarter to pay someone who specializes in it, and focus on the 'core technology' of AGEOD: creating and perfecting games....

Fortune 500 companies often outsource their 'non-core' work, so I think AGEOD is wise to 'copy the big dogs'....

Actually I do miss the time when pc games came in a big box with big (!) manuals inside, sometimes even goodies. Sitting on the couch with a cup of coffee and reading the manual prior to installing the game was part of the fun. Actually a big part.

I do not like reading on the computer, and consequently, I do not like pdf manuals. Anyway, nowadays most of the manuals are that thin, that I don't need to, but I don't like this either.

I still have 2 or three of these old card bord boxes (Aces of the deep, Der Patrizier, Panzergeneral) and I will keep them. Sometimes I look at them and think that I am getting old. :niark:

Convincing arguments. but games can already be ordered directly from ageod? I got ACW sent from France and there was no problem whatsoever (I'm a german customer).
