Stupid, illogical, potentially fatal retreat flaw

Can someone enlighten me as to the logic behind the retreat rules when a unit loses a battle?

I lose a battle as UK at Stanwix and instead of retreating towards their supply, the units always retreat to the wilderness area to the south.

Doesn't matter whether my units were in place or marched into the area.

I just marched a regiment from Savannah to Augusta and it lost the battle. Does it retreat towards supply or even the freaking area it just left? Of course not! It retreats to the northwest and into some godforsaken, stupid wilderness area.

I'm sorry, but that's stupid and wrong and pretty much makes me wonder whether I should bother purchasing any game built on this system.

I know AACW has variables you can tweak for retreat logic but I don't think WiA has?

Cheers, Chris

EDIT: I see it has in the GameLogic.opt file in the settings folder. You could try tweaking these :-

// ***** CONTROL & RETREAT *****
ctlContested = 5 // Minimum control gained upon entering a region (if not passive)
ctlAllowRetreat = 0 // Minimum control to have in a region to allow a retreat into it [changed from = 5 on 090501]
ctlRetreatAdjCity = 5 // Interest in retreating toward a region with a city (per level)
ctlRetreatAdjFort = 30 // Interest in retreating toward a region with a fort (per level)
ctlRetreatAdjDepot = 25 // Interest in retreating toward a region with a depot (per level)
ctlRetreatLandLink = 10 // Interest in retreating toward a region, value per land link
ctlRetreatPrevSubSpaceCoeffH = 250 // Coefficient applied to the interest if the region is the one where we are coming from
ctlNoBeachHead = 10 // Minimum control to have so that a region is not a beach/riverhead if you have to cross a body of water before attacking
cltRetPenaltyPerNmySU = 4 // retreat penalty (in interest pts) for each nmy SU in retreating region

Doesn't it also depend on what version of the game you are running?
Wasn't there a major game engine retreat issue from RoP, and AACW, which has recently been fixed?

Yes, the player must be in the latest patch.
