Holy cow, how am I supposed to get my head around this scenario? The number of forces and regions are pretty darn high. It is pretty overwhelming starting a game with this much 'stuff'. Perhaps this game isn't for me.

I tend to like games where you start off smaller and build your land holdings / army up so you can digest it bit by bit. It probably doesn't help that I'm not a history buff, only a fan of strategy games. I'm definitely not a genius, but I don't think most people would consider me unintelligent either.

Any tips on how to get a grasp of this game's larger scenarios?

The forums are pretty quiet here, but I guess I am late to the party by a couple years.

Well, WIA isn't the best game for that, though it still is a good game. Try starting off with some of the smaller scenarios, and if you want a "long" campaign that is still smaller, the War of 1812 is pretty good.
Oh, and AACW sounds like just what you want, though there still is eventually a huge amount of units, you start off with a handfull of of units and build most of the rest.

WIA also has some "regional" campaigns: Decision in the North, in the South, etc.

While these are not just subsets of the grand campaign, they will help give you a sense of what the goals in each region should be. Learning to win the smaller scenarios is probably the best introduction to what you should be doing in the long game.

Thanks for the responses. One thing that I noticed in the revolution campaign is that a lot of the forces are locked (34 out of 53 -- at least for the British). This might make it more managable. Managing 19 forces is a lot better than managing 53. Maybe I'll give it another go.

You learn where your forces are and it really isn't too hard to keep track of it all. This is a fun and exciting scenario, where you REALLY get to try out a few radical strategies!
