Hey Ian, welcome to the Ageod community... :coeurs:

To gain some decent game experience with the AGE-games series you do nothing wrong starting with BOA or WIA.
With the later one you should give the whole Independance War campaign from 1775 onwards a try. I suggest you start playing the British side and concentrate your focus first on the North until you gained enough experience with all the options and possibilities, then restart and take two theaters into focus, first the North, second the South.
For example, try in the North as soon as possible to send most of your troops by sea with your complete fleet to New York and make an amphibious landing there with a conservative assault lead by your best active 3-star general or a decent 2-star like Bourgoyne. Attack the city if you get it not at the first turn after landing, then you have a decent base for all northern operations.
Make later an approach to Albany and Philadelphia with two strong armies as the weather allowed you this.
In the South you have two options: you can either go directly to Savannah or as I prefer more to Norfolk. Shortly after starting the game you have a small army nearby Norfolk commanded by the Virginian Gouverneur which you can send easily by the two ships in Yorktown to Norfolk and taking the city without any resistance. Do that as soon as possible or it will be lost to the Americans and you must wait until the following time as the Cornwallis expedition appears in the south.
Then you will approximately loose your small Virginian army due to the heavy resistance of the Americans.Your Virginian army can only gain a decent survival in the well supplied city of Norfolk which can even supply a very big army.
After placing most of your earlier armies in the relevant citis in the North and South you can now think about your next steps and additional you can muster some good reinforcement by some options. Choose wisely.
I suggest choose Artillery, 1 supply wagon and the dragoons and then the Highlanders, the Germans and if still possible the two regular regiments. They will all appear in Halifax. Now you should reorganize your complete fleets into one strong combat fleet with some transports around half of the necessary weight points to transport a decent army around. The next one should able to transport around 100 points to get the usual forces in Halifax. A little escort for this fleet with scouts and one heavy is useful. The smallest fleet you can get appears after around 6-8 turns in Jamaica where you can catch the there existing free regiments Royal American and such else. Transport them to Mobile where you will have some additional troops. Then if you have enough Engagement points over to buy options buy regular replacements and then take some single-bataillon regiments like the Royal Americans seperate from the stack and set them in passive mode, so the AI will give them eeventually the replacements at once at the next turn. In the other case the AI will randomize the replacements according to some need, but this is not always wishful. For example you can improve some elite units like the Grenadiers from single units to multiple-units regiments if you do this clever enough with some elite replacements. And believe me you will have a decent need for such good units in the later game. They are your elite together with the Highlanders. Use them wisely.

Sofar for now...Hope it will be helpful...

Dear sapper, as I remember you get access to more replacements either by using some decent options or additionally by possessing some key cities in different regions.

As the British you should maintain a strong force in New York supported by your fleet. Besides of that you should use your military options to recruit new additional regiments like 2 regulars, one highlander, one german mercenaries, one dragoon and one artillery until the end of 1776. Then split your fleet slightly as you should send necessary transports with some escorts to Halifax during good weather phases to bring this reinforcements either to NY or to Norfolk.
You should have get until the end of 1776 THREE armies in New England/NY Area commanded by Gage,Clinton and Grey, then you can split your army in three parts :o ne main army to take care of the American main army, one very small but decent one to garrison NY and eventually fortify it, the rest of you forces should be used as an Assault Force to capture Philadelphia as soon as possible.
In the South you should consider carefully the use of Cornwallis' Army. Don't go for Charleston,it is better to take a foothold either in Norfolk or still better in Savannah. From Savannah you can start to gain the hinterland, the backyard of Charleston to stimulate the rise of new loyalist militias. But do not forget to bolster the defense of Norfolk you need it additionally for recruiting new militias and as an supply point for your fleets.
If Bourgoyne approaches eventually in spring 1777( or was it 1776) you should use its forces wisely. You can either go the easier way and reinforce your efforts in the NE/NY area or you can take another strategical approach.
You can then choose if you take the historical one and reinforce Quebec and later Montreal, but you will have later on very harsh problems if you want to go south to Ticonderoga and Albany. If you want to do an absolutely different approach then attack Baltimore and Alexandria or take if in american possession Boston and the northern coastal cities to block the arrival of some american reinforcements.

Sofar my advice it belongs all to your personal abilities how you develop a decent strategy to defeat the Americans. Its simply learning by doing like in old scout boy days...
