Those Conservative British Commanders

Tue Jan 26, 2010 11:23 pm

In the FIW campaign, I look forward to guys like Braddock being called home. He is quite the humbug, so I keep his command near Baltimore, hoping to catch any raiding French in southern PA. Ft Duquesne in 1755? Methinks that's out of the question.

The Brits' lack of mobility is maddening, so I keep trying alternatives, such as provincial rapid-reaction groups. I'm using the Colonial faction alternative campaign scenario, which is quite interesting. I keep hoping to recreate the mythical Ft. Wilderness battle of "The Patriot", but have had no luck so far.

I WILL say that it's much more fun manuevering the Colonials and allied Natives than the conventional Brit regulars with their European siege mentality.

One tactic I use is to send all the individual units without leaders and then have the leaders 'catch up.' Of course this is not so smart a move if the French and Indians have laid an ambush outside the future Fort Pitt.

You are going to be out-generaled, so the alternative, in my view, is to smother your opponent with numbers.

Not "The Patriot" but "Last of the Mohegans" is the model for the British, stand up proud, and fall with dignity.
