Could someone please describe the special icons that appear on the units on the map panel? Thanks in advance.

You mean the special abilities icons??
Or the box like icons (NATO icons)?
In any case, check the end of the manual. You have a full list of both there. :)
Besides, click on a leader or unit element to open the unit detail panel.
If the leader or unit have some special abilities you will see the icon there and the tooltip will provide all the details about it.

No it looks like a fort? can't quite make it out. But it indictates the units status?
Edit: Could possible mean entrenched?

Oh, you mean the icons that appear besides the stack on the map?
I think on the manual most of them are explained also.
The one you ask for is probably the entrenched icon. it means the stack has been there for a turn or more and the units have now some defensive advantages.
There are two: a little men behind a parapet (level one) and a little gun sticking out a parapet (level wo entrenchment).
The level tow can only be attained if the stack has artillery.
To confirm this, check the icons on the upper right of the units panel. By the supply, activation, detection… icons, the entrenched stacks will have a zigzagging line icon with a number (1 or 2).
Cheers!

EDIT: now that i think of it, it can be also the "inside structure" icon. :bonk: :D

Thanks. It was the entrenched icon. Have tried ACW to much management. This looks exactly what I was after. I like the streamlined play (just miss the division/corps groupings but understand it reflects the period).

A good definition of the game!
It ask less time and effort than the ACW, certainly, but keeps the great game play :coeurs:
Welcome aboard!
