A few questions after playing the demo

Tue Aug 12, 2008 4:46 pm

I think that I had a blast after playing around with the demo a few times. I'm not too sure because of some odd moments that left me scratching my head, but getting a mess of new troops in early 76 left me feeling like I should buy the game so I could actually use them.

I focused on the Brits a lot more than the American force, but I've got a few questions that I was wondering if anyone could answer.

First off, is there a way to beat the super-stack that is Washington's force? He's actually forced me out of Boston before, and I'm sure that he's smarter than I thought, usually waiting in the fog until I split my force to go do whatever before wiping me out.

Second, some of the timing seems odd, in both combat and events. First with events, I'm left wondering if they are a little loose, because Howe comes in a bit randomly as does the Canadian army. Is that supposed to happen? And when it comes to combat, I'm seeing things that I never say in ACW. A force attacking me will enter the region, get beat and back off, then come back in again and again to attack. Is that a new feature?

Anyways, I'll probably pick this up within the week. Good game y'all.

Glad you enjoyed it! :)

Washington is a tough nut, well dug in, etc. The only time I beat him, I pretty much ruined the Brits as well. IMHO, dividing your forces isn't a good idea...

....maybe evacuate Boston on the fleet and go to New York? :siffle:

Yes, some events have a 'randomness'. Otherwise it is too rigidly following history, and not as fun to play a second time ;)

As for the 'persistance' of attacks, AFAIK, there is not a new feature per se, but a much more advanced AI from BoA.. :sourcil:

Yeah, after he leaves I go straight to New York, but I've never managed to break the walls before winter sets in.

It is vital to capture cities along your supply chain, and go for harbors they can be supplied by sea.

I dunno about Washington, I had no problem with his army and destroyed them in a cauldron. But generally the key to beating any stack is the defense. That means blocking every natural obstacle (river crossings, major roads) with a stack of your own. Sooner or later the AI will attack and get a beating.

when the time is right try to capture the enemy supply bases (once they leave them) and always leave 1 cheap unit in every town you capture, that drives the AI into dire supply problems. It cannot establish solid fronts / supply chains at all.
