PBS' "The War That Made America"

Sat Jun 05, 2010 12:03 am

I got this DVD set from the library, and I am just starting to watch it. It is narrated by Oneida native & actor Graham Greene. For an introduction to the French and Indian War, this series has been recommended. Unusually, for a PBS series, it is in 5.1 sound. It is 4 hours in length. More about it later.

Got this a few years ago and it is quite good. The French perspective is a bit lacking and there is a bit too much emphasis on Washington, but still pretty good.

Yes, it is a well-done series, with emphasis on Washington AND the conributions/effects of Native Americans. Since it is focused on America, this is understandable. As for presenter Graham Greene, this 57 year old character actor is a favorite of mine, and he serves well as narrator of the series.

Also, I got "Last of the Mohicans", starring Daniel Day Lewis. Excellent movie, with the historical focus on the siege of Ft William Henry in 1757. The DVD offers the 117 minute director's cut.

For some strange reason, I find myself drawn to the Colonial faction version of the French & Indian War rather than the Revolutionary War. Perhaps it is because it is so little understood as part of a world war, and it changed the future so much. The results of a French victory are impossible to fathom.

I watched the PBS DVD a couple of times and really enjoyed it.

I just finished Black Robe - which if you are into the period and can get it cheap is quite good :-

Cheers, Chris
