events - two odd ones

Sun Jan 24, 2010 6:01 pm

Couple of event text notes:

1) The events "Sir, the enemy is gaining the upper hand in the war. We have lost 1 Engagement Point" - or it's equivalent for winning - seem to be mis-worded, since AFAICT the effect is to raise or lower morale, not EP.

2) I've noticed this happen a few times before playing the Brits, but here's an American example (to be found in the Nov 77 turn in the attached savegame): Message appears saying supplies have arrived, "latest shipment from Hortelez & Co" or whatever the text; clicking the event will focus screen on a particular location (in this case, Philadelphia). But lo and behold, a new supply unit there is none! My theory is that in some events the supplies sent are actually ice cream, and it melts before I get to use it. But maybe it's a glitch? :D

Hi!
Are you sure the Hortelez supply wagon is not somewhere else??
I think some events center on the side capital instead of where they should center.
About the first... i have think about it sometimes, but i'm not sure there is any bug here. I think taking a strategic or objective town will give you both EP and NM points.
Given the continue EP earning/spending its difficult to be sure if you didn't get the one the message said :bonk:
Cheers

I wasn't thinking it's a bug, but maybe an error in the event text - if the events actually affect NM, maybe they should say "morale" instead of EP?

I'm not entirely sure - I went through the unit roster and checked every stack, but I'm assuming that all the supply units created by this event are designated "Hortelez". If that's not true, I can't say for sure because I wasn't counting the others. I did notice in the following turn that a different event fired with a slightly different text - something like "The second Hortelez shipment has arrived" - and that did create a supply unit at Philly. Is it possible that a duplicate set of events exist in the data files, one functional and the other not? A hold-over from some earlier patch or beta version, maybe?

Mmm... it may be... i think something was tweaked regarding those Hortelez wagons so they didn't arrived at Phily if the brits had conquered the rebel capital.
Lodi will know! he knows everything! :D
Cheers!

The Hortelez events are a series of separate occurances. [total of 3] :)

The third one was modified to deliver artillery and 1st Pennsylvania Rifles. During this fix, the supply unit got dropped :o
Don't know why, but we'll put it back!! :D

The EP loss message in your example occurs on a turn where you
a) Lost Richmond
b) Got wiped out at The Heights

IIRC, the Richmond loss would trigger the "Sir" message, and would cost NM and EP loss. The text for this is in the "global" AGE strings file, and thus I cannot directly change it. Will investigate to confirm what happens for sure with this message, then 'clean it up'.

Thanks for your inputs!

arsan: you flatter me. I don't know everything, but Pocus does, so I ask him often :w00t:

Hehe, no doubt having the AGEOD developer as a backup helps a little... ;) :D

Thanks, Lodi - that explains it. I didn't connect those two units with the event since it didn't seem logical that the French could be sending me Pennsylvanian backwoodsmen! :D

Just to be clear: not questioning the logic of these events, just wondering if they're WAD - or actually, maybe "written as designed" is the right phrase, since if these events were only intended to affect NM, only the event text would need a fix. The "Sir" events seem to be working in every respect except that I'm seeing NM loss/gain and no change to EP - could be wrong, EP can be difficult to monitor from turn to turn. NM, on the other hand, is definitely affected by the event.

Thanks for your inputs!

Happy to help improve an already splendid game. :)

Research and conversation with Pocus says:

The "Sir....EP loss" is reporting correctly loss of EP. It is triggered by the loss of an Objective.

The NM losses associated are included in the "We've had better days/Celebrations" messages that occur with same Objective loss.

Yes mildly unclear, so we'll look at a way to clarify this for WIA :D
