Family Types

Mon Apr 14, 2008 2:08 pm

I wonder where can I read about family types characteristics? I am not sure where to include archers or velites, are they skirmishers or light infantry? Or are families only used to classify replacements?

this is mostly used for replacements yes, but also can be used for the AI and some attributes, like checking if the unit can take a structure - so better make it right. I would say velites as skirmishers and archers either as skirms or as LI, should not matter much.

Nope, combat is directly inside the model description, and terrain effect linked to the models move type :cwboy:

ah yes, I forgot this one! The terrain matrix differenciate between regulars, militias and irregulars and depending of the family, you belong to one category or another... both families (skirmisher and light inf) are in the irregular type anyway.

Ok, I will use skirmish to denote poor armed infantry, like rorarii, or would be better to have them as militia?
Another question, what about famraider? would be that useful for Numidian cavalry? or would be better to use just cavalry? what are the differences between cavalry and hvycavalry families?

poor units should be of the militia type, as the combat matrix penalize them in hostile terrains, although they fight not too bad on defense of cities or at home.
famraider can be used for a raiding cavalry yes, the AI will use that for raids. cavalry can do though. Heavy Cavalry need special replacements, so I would use them for elephants instead, and are never used by the AI for recon and raids.

I need to differenciate Numidians as light cavalry from the rest, so what about this classification

Numidians: raiders
Elephants: Hvy Cavalry
the rest of cavalry as normal cavalry
