(fictional) war diary of Ivan Vassilievich Sabaneev, Aide de Camp and Advisor of H.M. Alexander I Czar.

Eastern Saxony, 8 May
We left the Western bank of the Elbe and the frontline and returned to the Grand Imperial HQ.
Our garrisoned fortresses along the Elbe hold; the enemy is sitting engulfed in siege operations.
The Campaign will be decided by diplomacy. Our Czar received a letter from his brother the Emperor of Austria. A Wien mission reached Napoleon’s HQ with offers for a negotiated solution of the war. Austria is ready to army mobilization in reaction to French deny. Austrian legation reported of low morale and bad moods at the French HQ, with most Marshals doubtful against Napoleon’s plans to carry on the war.
Sweden is close to joint Coalition side, too. We expect Crown Prince Bernadotte to land in Stralsund to assume command of the Sweden-Prussian Army of the North.
British Navy is disembarking weapons, ammunition, supplies at Baltic harbors.
Polish ambitions and dreams of independence have been doomed: European peoples are searching for an end to Napoleonic wars!

Napoleon: The army will obey me!

Cotbus, Imperial GHQ, May 19
The armistice as been signed!
It’ll will take full effect starting from June the 15th.

Cotbus, May 22
It’s a paradox! The imminent armistice made opponents frenzy with search for last minute gains.
Napoleon is on the offensive along the full length of the Elbe Front. Wittgeenstain decided to leave the safety of Danzig walls to search fortune on the battlefield. Buelow, left Magdeburg to Eugene’s occupation troops and rather than moving to defend Berlin rushed for Hamburg looking to engage the French troops besieging the city.
The search for last minute victories to be presented at the halls of diplomacy will provide thousand of dead and wounded men, from both sides!

Cotbus, May 23
Wittgenstein grabbed is part of glory. On the eve of the truce he launched his powerful army on the offensive against Ney’s corps. The French marshal was isolated from Napoleon’s main armies: Ney was hardly beaten. The powerful French Corps was annihilated in the fight.

Cotbus, May 24
Eugene Army crossed the Elbe at Magdeburg; few days later entered Berlin almost unopposed. That happened on the eve of the armistice taking full effects. Possibly he’ll have to retreat back on the Elbe Western back according to preliminary agreements that opened the way to the truce.

Cotbus, May 25
Torgau surrendered to last Napoleon assault. The struggle for Torgau was a brave, bloody fight that deeply influenced operation on the Elbe theatre. Napoleon was at bay with that trouble for weeks, locked in Leipzig. Blucher had at last to capitulate but his sacrifice frustrated Napoleon’s plans for a quick advance in Germany.

Cotbus, May 26
Hamburg has been relieved: we got the news at breakfast time.
Buelow defeated the French besiegers and forced them to retire on the south-western bank of the Elbe.

Cotbus, May 26
Today at sunset the Armistice took full effect.
The operations ended on all fronts, closing this last bloody campaign.
We entered war with France almost one year ago, when Napoleon leaded his more one half million men army to invade Russia. Few months later he entered Moskow, but nobody was there asking for peace. Then the ancient Russian capital went consumed with fires: Napoleon’s dreams went to ashes with that too.
At December decimated remnants of the French invasion army left Russian soil shadowed by our victorious armies. We stop the pursuit on the Elbe river where till we stand!
Ney: The army will not move!

Napoleon: The army will obey me!

Ney: The army will obey to its Generals’ orders!

Game turn 8: Resolution

Engagements and changes in objectives control resulted out of a quite fluid situation, with forces no more locked in place.

DRESDEN
The Coalition Army left the city to engage on the field Ney's Corps besieging Dresden.

Image

In the battle, Ney's force was wiped out. Coalition gained 8 NM points

HAMBURG
Left Magbeburg, now controlled by French troops, (Eugene's Army) Bulow Prussian Korps reached Hamburg to engage Vandamme Corps.

Image

In the victorious field battle Coalition gained 3 NM points.

BERLIN
Eugene's army moved from Magdeburg to Berlin and occupied the Prussian Capital weakely defended.

Image

1 MN point was lost by COA in the Battle.
24 NM points were lost by COA for losing own side capital.

TORGAU
In the last assault to Torgau Napoleon breached the fortress walls. the town surrendered to French troops.

Image

No NM points were lost of gained in the battle.
3 NM were lost by Coalition for the fall of th objective city.
Ney: The army will not move!

Napoleon: The army will obey me!

Ney: The army will obey to its Generals’ orders!

Scenario Conclusion

Thu Jan 01, 2009 10:12 pm

Image

Image

Here are the results at scenario end.
Victory was credited to Coalition side in reason of the superior number of accumulated VPs.
France has a superior NM as a result of the Cooalition NM drop caused by fall of Berlin, the COA capital.
Notice that credited VPs, NM points, combat losses for the two sides were very closed.
Coalition gained a political victory triggering the truce: The Armistice influenced on its own, as already pointed out, NM and VP credited to Coalition side.
Ney: The army will not move!

Napoleon: The army will obey me!

Ney: The army will obey to its Generals’ orders!

May be there's a reason for that!
Scenario objectives are not specular, but they change as per side and following events.
You'll notice Berlin is not included in your Objectives list at game end!
Isn't it?
I please you to post here your Secretary of State Ledger page as it looks at game end.... that will help discussion and clarification of some topics.

The "victories issue" is a clear program oddity!
Of course, that could not be noticed when playing solo games agaist Athena. It'll worth to report the thing to AGEod fixing team!

Tech discussion

Fri Jan 02, 2009 3:34 pm

Tech discussion: oddities in victory notification.

I do not know details behind AGeod engine compute of winning side.

VP, NM, compat losses are matching in the ledger pages for the two side.

Looking to Objectives list, is to be pointed out that COA has 17 Objectives enlisted while FRA has just 13.
Then COA controls 10 Objectives out of 17; FRA controls 10 out of 13.
Cannot say if that could influence the compute of the winner.

Indeed when no major, sudden death conditions are triggered, only VP should be regarded for winner notification.

Guess this scenario should have been ended as a draw or stalemate, not surely a major COA victory, or a minor FRA victory!
SO I STAR THINKING SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH AGEOD NCP ENGINE!

As regard oddities regarding no matching notification for FRA side between message roster and victory pup up window guess there's something wrong with NCP_LocalStrings or AGEod_LocalStrings: all textual messages coming out of LocalStrings files.
Ney: The army will not move!

Napoleon: The army will obey me!

Ney: The army will obey to its Generals’ orders!

Scenario analysis

Fri Jan 02, 2009 11:45 pm

Scenario and game analysis

Starting deployment
At start COA forces are widely spreaded over scenario map: A first army is in Poland-Easter Prussia dealing with FRA controlled fortresses. The Russian Army of Reserve starts nearby Breslau, (Silesia).
The Main COA Army, (Wittgenstein) is spawned along the western bank of Elbe, from Magdeburg to Dresden.

at scenario start FRA main force is deployed around Braunschweig, (Eugene’s Army of Elbe). FRA has then garrisons occupying fortresses in Poland, Prussia and Saxony. Rapp’s Corps is in Danzig.
FRA Napoleon’s Army of Rhein, (later Grand Armée d’Alemagne) is available from start of turn two nearby Mainz.

Balance of power
Overally we have a balanced scenario in matter of men per side. FRA has an advantage in its stronger leaders. Starting forces from COA and FRA side are not at full ranks; replacements become available later during the game, ata random date.
Napoleon’s Army of Rhein enters the scenario mostly at full strength.

Objectives
Leipzig, Dresden, Hamburg, located along the western bank of river Elbe are themajor objectives for the two sides. At campaign start they are COA controlled. Magdeburg and Torgau, although not really NM worthy, are two fortresses located at strategic bottleneck positions: they are FRA controlled at the beginning.
Berlin, COA capital, is not NM worth for the FRA at scenario start.
Danzig, Estern Prussia, is the last major objective: it is FRA controlled at start.
Many fortresses, spawned over scenario map are also campaign Objectives: they are FRA controlled at start.

Armistice
This is an uncertain end-date scenario.
Triggering the armistice at any date later mid’ May will end the campaign. Max end date is awyway last week of June.
Armistice triggering grants VP and NM gain to the COA.
Armistice is triggered as per FE Max value (default level 100).
FE points are allocated on a random base for major objectives control, (Leipzig, Dresden, Hamburg); added or subtracted for victories of defeats in major battles; credited following historical random events.

Strategies
The control of the Elbe line is the key to succeed. Leipzig, Dresden, Hamburg, Magdeburg and Torgau are the objectives to be controlled. They are worth VP, NM, FE points for both sides.

Holding a defensive posture, while looking for the armistice signature is the best COA winning strategy.
COA has to manouver main forces to hold the Elbe front-line, while few forces should be committed to besiege or assault FRA controlled fortresses eastern of Elbe river.

FRA has to play an offensive campaign. Napoleon’s Army of Rhein has to advance fast, possibly by forced marches, linking up with Eugene’s Army of Elbe. When FRA forces are concentrated on the western bank of the Elbe they have to strike soon and gain control of Leipzig, Dresden, Hamburg. That will slow down FE points credited to COA for armistice triggering. Gaining one or two turns to play, postponing the armistice or preventing the armistice signature at all will give FRA victory.
Ney: The army will not move!

Napoleon: The army will obey me!

Ney: The army will obey to its Generals’ orders!

The graphics and working and not very appropriate yes. Your draw should be a minor defeat and JastaV victory should be minor victory. I believe we would need to edit the graphics to be clearer (and perhaps the messages wording too). But you were 'minorly' defeated, don't be mistaken ;)

Nice AAR guys, congrats to the both of you, and particularly to JastaV for his good work.
