AGE wiki opened!

Sat Apr 11, 2009 11:50 am

The Adaptive Game Engine Wiki has opened!

http://www.ageod.net/agewiki/Main_Page

Its first goal is to archive everything which is known on modding. But rules, strategy tips and various articles are welcome. Note that this is the AGE wiki, so the info added in should be valid across several games, two at least.

I'll let Rafiki expand on its description and goals. Modders are welcome to flesh it with what they know about modding the engine. I for one will add new commands descriptions as soon as possible.

Do note that it has very recently been set up, and that it will need some time to grow. Currently, there isn't that much to add about descriptions and goals; Pocus pins it pretty well :)

I have some good news and some bad news; what would you like to hear first?

OK, the bad news. Everyone (7 or 8 people, last time I checked) who has registered a user account on AGEWiki has done so in vain; those user accounts are no longer accessible. My apologies to them for the inconvenience of this.

The good news, however, is that AGEWiki and AACWWiki now use the same user database. I.e. you use the same username and password to access AGEWiki as you use to access AACWWiki (and vice versa). It's not single-signon, but it should make things a few steps easier for everyone involved :)

Since my last post here, I have mainly been working on technical issues; upgrading the software, setting up frameworks and so forth. This shouldn't stop others from bringing out the keyboards and pour their modding knowledge into the wiki :cool:

If I may bring your attention to one of the goals of the wiki: to document the various parts and components of the AGE scripting engine.

AGE has a very large number of script commands, so thought needs to put into how it is best to document them; both individually and as a group.

Based on information from Pocus (much obliged, noble squirrel!), there is now a page that documents the "RemoveStructure"-command. It makes use of a template which is there to make it easier to standardize how the script commands are presented.

I think there is good room to improve that page; question is how? What would make it really useful for people who might want to remove structures in AGE?

I'm asking everyone, from the would-be modders, via the novice modders to the experienced modders; well, I guess anyone who is even slightly interested in AGE :)

No opinions? Should I take that to mean that the presentation is perfect for all target audiences? :w00t:

Maybe it is too late, or difficult / impossible to do, but the really useful stuff for us would be to have examples of EXCEL (or OpenOffice) templates for each one...in such a way we could receive the modders data in the correct format and not lose data :)

It is never too late to find ways to make the wikis better :)

In which forms can such examples or templates be provided?

Can a small ExCel spreadsheet be imbedded in the Wiki, similar to a graphic?

Then we can look at it in Wiki, and download as a Spreadsheet template to cut/copy/paste....

Being utterly unfamiliar with Excel, I have to admit I don't know how spreadsheets can be embedded, unless you mean one of the two following:

- A file uploaded, that you link to (which contains the template/example)
- A screenshot of how the command looks in Excel.

Is it possible to do somthing with text-formatting, that would make is easier to copy/paste into Excel (with mulit-cell paseting, that is)

Pasting into Excel or OO is wierd.

I think a screenshot with a link to file would do...

...or maybe even just the link to the file for simplicity [if the wanna use it, they'll open the link anyway]

Yeah, that's it! Just a link to a file ;)

I win this argument! :blink: :wacko:

How about having an excel sheet that contains templates/examples for all events? One that gets added to as new event commands are integrated into the engine? Sort of like a "modder's library"?

Reference Document & Excel

Tue Apr 21, 2009 1:35 pm

Yes, I am starting to work on such a document, because I need it for VGN... as a starter, I already made the list of command keywords...next will be the Excel syntax

The first thing I did when I joined the team was to create this document using all I could found on the wiki and on the forum about scripting commands...

I still need to update it with all the recent changes made for VGN... :siffle:

Very handy Generalisimo and Phil. These are both very good references to have for modding. I like Generalisimo's keywords included with the commands.
Good job.

For information, OpenOffice Writer has an export function to mediawiki format.

Only Writer, not Calc.

But you can copy/paste cells from Calc in a document in Writer.

Awesome!

Suggestion. Instead of AACW Wiki, make it AGE Wiki.

And then have some small graphic to represent each title.

So, Let us say for example,

CreateStruc {All}

EvalMoney {ACW Icon VGN Icon}

{All} means it is usable in all games Modding.

EvalMoney {ACW Icon VGN Icon} would show ony valid in ACW & VGN

http://www.ageod.net/aacwwiki/Modding_events - I think this is an {All}
http://www.ageod.net/aacwwiki/EvalMoney add Icons to show games it is valid for.

That way all modding commands can be documented, and everyone will know which ones work for which game.

I just had mulitiple wikigasms... :dada:

Yup, that's the plan, to have easy to use templates for indicating which games commands are available for.
paw1776 wrote:Suggestion. Instead of AACW Wiki, make it AGE Wiki.

AACWWiki has been there for quite some time, while AGEWiki was set up this year. AACWWiki deals with the game, while AGEWiki deals with the engine.

Currently there is a lot of things in AACWWiki that are more at home at AGEWiki, and the plan is to move it over :)
