Nice work, Gray :)

Would it be possible to move the city icon a bit further south? So as to leave no doubt which region the city is in?

Gray, in my rereading of Foote's Civil War trilogy I am now at the point where the Army of the Potomac has crossed the James River and is undertaking its near-thing attacks against Petersburg. So I especially appreciate these latest tweaks of yours.

Your fanatical dedication to historical accuracy is astounding! I salute you, sir! :gardavou:

I should integrate your work in my mod in the next days. i'm just yet thinking a bit about possible gameplays inconveniancies before drawing the line.

Gray_Lensman wrote:Thanks... I would really like to split the Charles City, VA region along the Chickahominy River, but that involves creating a brand new region, which I don't have the time to figure out until I complete the RR MOD. This Petersburg MOD was relatively simple. The only hard part was finding the reinforcements and militias that were originally bound for Petersburg, Prince George, VA and diverting them to Petersburg, Dinwiddie, VA.

BTW, this Petersburg MOD is indeed built into the next upload of the RR MOD, so I'm looking forward to you and bigus coming up with an 1864 Virginia Scenario as soon as I can upload it. I'm waiting for v1.09 to get the bugs worked out of it, since it contains the RR MOD files up to 20080117.

I actually have a RR MOD 20080129 (internal working copy) with the Petersburg MOD and New Jersey RR rework in it, fully compatible with v1.09.

Great work Gray!
Since 1.09 seems stable I'll start on the wilderness scenario this weekend.
I need to get in some playing time as well so it might take a week and then I'll send you and berto the scenario to check out.

I'm currently d/l v1.09 and haven't done anything since v1.06.

But wanted to ask if the region 'Richmond' has been properly changed to 'Henrico', and if what was 'Henrico' has been properly changed to 'Chesterfield' region?

Those original region names are way off.

And how does one go about opening an RGN file?

Thanks. I was really tired when I wrote that and for didn't get a menu option when I tried to open the file (which left me totally befuddled).

Now that that's behind us, I just tested it on three counties and it's so easy to do it's trivial.

But are we really sure there are no side effects to this?

Perhaps you could start a thread for listing candidates for renaming in a systematic way and in a consistant format (state, file name, old region name, new region name), and review it for accuracy and include it in a patch.

For example, in my own game I've just done the following:

State: New York

File Name: 5New York, NY

Old Name: New York, NY

New Name: Westchester, NY

Reason: The landmass north of New York City that you can move the cursor over is actually occupied by Westchester County (where I live). New York City still appears as New York City. [This actually makes me a bit nervous, and you know far better than I do what other ramifications this might have to the program].

State: Connecticut

File Name: 4Westchester, CT

Old Name: Westchester, CT

New Name: Fairfield, CT

Reason: Westchester is in NY, area in CT shown on map is actually Fairfield county.

State: Connecticut

File Name: 3Berkshire, CT

Old Name: Berkshire, CT

New Name: Litchfield, CT

Reason: Area shown on map in CT is Litchfield county, and the Berkshires are somewhere completely different.

I think if you collect info for region renaming in a single thread in this format, different people (who are likely to notice anomalies because they actually live in the effected places) can flag problem areas and make their proposed change suggestions. When enough of this information has been collected, it can be reviewed and added to a patch, or not. There seem to be lots of wiki's with the county names of the different states, and, more importantly, if you look closely you can often figure out what the counties or regions were referred to as in the 19th century (counties tended to be larger then, and have often been split up into smaller units). In cases where a region occupies several counties you'll have to use judgment (shudder) and maybe do a little research (which we know you're very good at).

The trick here will be to put this together in a way that maximizes the accuracy of nomenclature but doesn't over-burden whoever is pulling this together. And someone who knows what they're doing has to review all the suggestions, because some of them will be wrong-headed or simply wrong.

Gray_Lensman wrote:My only question regarding side effects was concerning event reinforcements and whether their placement would be any way messed up by this. I think Pocus was telling me that it wouldn't be, but testing it out on 147Richmond, VA.rgn" would be an excellent region to test it with and that is what PBoeye was asking about above.

Just quickly here, but a long time ago when I was asking about this, Pocus told me on a number of occasions that changing the display name in the rgn file would screw up replacement/reinforcements. I took him at face value.

This would be a good thing for people to check out, however.

Gray_Lensman wrote:If it does mess up reinforcement placement, then forget about Richmond, VA. It would be a tremendous amount of work to find all the event reinforcements and change them. It took me several hours just to check for and find the few that showed up in Prince George's VA.

I just ran a test using a unique rename inside the Richmond region file. No issues seen with reinforcements, events, etc. :cwboy:

I suspect that as long as we don't change the Regions.ini alias file, "everybody will be able to go home".

This is some nice work GL! Thanks from a Richmond native. Now if I could only talk you into working in the port (boat landing) at City Point... :innocent:

Yeah, I know, I'm a baaaad boy...

May I suggest that we start a thread in the non-mod section of the AACW forum to collect all of the suggestions for the re-naming of regions? A lot of areas will fall through the cracks if we don't try to get the information in one place. And by posting in the non-mod part of the forum anyone can ask themselves if they're happy with the way the area in which they live is named. Though you may get a few suggestions that such and such a region should be named Six Flags because that's what we refer to it as...

I would propose using the format in my earlier post above, I would also propose that we request posts in that thread be restricted to renaming proposals.

You know your forum better than I do. The animosity thing surprises me, but I remember seeing people getting bent out of shape in the EU II forums because a mod of the game might make it behave in a more historically authentic manner...

Hey, thanks for the quick response GL. I will be interested to see if it changes the AI tactics for getting at Richmond via Petersburg like during the war itself.
I am sure that in Human vs. Human games it will make the CSA player garrison Petersburg and the James River a lot more than in the past- which, if I might be so bold, is as it should be.

Again, thanks for all the hard work.

Hey Grey,

I am playing through the April 61' campaign with this mod and have found a militia unit being deployed where Petersburg used to be.

Name = Petersburg Militia
Time of arrival = Late June 61', Ifin I remember correctly.

This is a permanently locked militia unit, that shows up under the "All states mobilize their militia" event.

I tried the militia fix, but it was the same date as the one already installed. I will try the latest RR mod, and see what happens.
