April 1861 scenario discrepancies

Tue Mar 17, 2009 11:13 pm

There seems to be some discrepancies in the April 1861 campaign scenario,

Several of the Confederate states may conduct offensive actions before the state succeeded from the Union. Dates of succession;

1. South Carolina - Dec. 20, 1860
2. Mississippi - Jan. 9, 1861
3. Florida - Jan. 10, 1861
4. Alabama - Jan. 11, 1861
5. Georgia - Jan. 19, 1861
6. Louisiana - Jan. 26, 1861
7. Texas - March 2, 1861
8. Virginia - April 17, 1861 (Turn 2 – Late April) (ratified by voters May 23, 1861)
9. Arkansas - May 6, 1861 (Turn 3 – Early May)
10. Tennessee - May 7, 1861 (Turn 3 – Early May) (ratified by voters June 8, 1861)
11. North Carolina - May 20, 1861 (Turn 4 – Late May)

There are a couple of Virginia militia units, (Winchester and Suffolk) that should be fixed for the first turn.

Leonidas Polk was commissioned a major-general on June 25, 1861. He should be fixed until Turn 6 – Late June or arrive as a reinforcement/event.

If the game goes this route, are there changes to be made to the Union too? Obviously, no Union troops should be able to move into a state that hasn't seceded yet--Lincoln, especially, was wary of anything that would provoke secession at this stage.

Probably this will mean locking more units for a few more turns.

Additional issues with April 1861 scenario,

Typo in the name Rockbridge
The Roxbridge Artillery unit should be deleted it is in Jackson's brigade
Jackson's brigade has extra artillery battery, Culpeper Artillery.

Culpeper was part of Edmund Kirby Smith brigade

Smith's brigade also had the 1st Maryland Infantry Battalion -- LtCol G.H. Steuart (Not sure if battalions can be modeled or use under strength regiment)

Bee's brigade is missing 6th NC regiment

Thomas Artillery Commander is Capt P. B. Stanard not Thomas

Bartow's brigade should arrive with the army of the Shenandoah not starting in Charleston.
From wikipedia
On June 1, 1861, Bartow was promoted to Colonel of the 8th Georgia Infantry, which had been formed in Virginia from companies that had been arriving from different Georgia counties. Later that day, he mustered the regiment for the first time at Camp Bartow in Howard's Grove in Richmond. The regiment was initially assigned to the Shenandoah Valley. Crossing the Virginia Piedmont, it arrived in Winchester, near the northern end of the valley. Once settled, Bartow incorporated some local forces to form the 2nd Brigade of the Army of the Shenandoah.

Bonham's Brigade is missing 8th Louisiana, Alexandria Light Artillery, 1st co Richmond Howitzers and most of the 30th Virginia Cavalry It looks like a new unit will have to be created for this similar to the uni_CSA_BDE1VA unit.

Longstreet is missing 24th Virginia

Holmes is missing the Camp Picken's Battery

Yes, I know it says "departed May 14, 1861" but remember Jackson's forces are placed on the map at 30% health and cohesion taking time to build up.

You will have to give some links to your information above in order for me to validate it. (Preferably not the Wikipedia if you can avoid it. Anyone can post in the Wikipedia)

Regarding Bartow,

New Georgia Encyclopedia

http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/nge/Article.jsp?id=h-3566

After the Civil War began in April 1861, he rushed home to take the "Oglethorpes" to the front in Virginia...After arriving in Virginia, Bartow was elected colonel of the Eighth Georgia Infantry Regiment. By July 1861 he was in command of a brigade, which he clumsily led into combat at the First Battle of Manassas.

Therefore, my suggestion was to have Bartow's Brigade arrive with Johnston's Shenandoah force on 1861/05/01 and allow him to 'fill out' along with the rest of the force.

Regarding the Rockbridge artillery, You have duplicate batteries. You have one in Jackson's Brigade (as an element) which appears correct to me and a separate battery armed with 20-pdr Parrotts that I felt need to be deleted. The problem is the unit type for Jackson's brigade is a 3 regiment brigade (2 CSA_Inf1 and 1 CSA_Shp). Instead, the 5 regiment 1 battery brigade unit needs to be used.
