The First Missouri Brigade

Mon May 04, 2009 5:54 am

After an extended hiatus from AACW I've now more time to play. With the most recent patch (1.13b I believe) I really have to say how great this game is for the civil war enthusiast and war-gamers in general.

After fiddling around with the new features I noticed that the Stonewall bde had lost it's elite status. Now, I understand this was a mistake and should be fixed in an upcoming patch. It really does the unit no justice to group it together with all the others.

Anyway, it got me thinking about the other elite outfits. Several months ago was able to convince the developers to add several more Confederate units with exceptional combat records: The Lawton-Gordon-Evans bde (Georgia bde), Barksdale's Mississippi bde, and the Texas Ranger Bde.

There's one more outfit I think should be included in Confederate elites

First Missouri Bde.

It should consist of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th MO infantry regiments, the 2nd MO artillery, and the 1st MO cavalry. They first formed late Dec 1861 in Missouri under General Little (later under Cockrell).

See Ephraim Anderson's "The First Missouri Confederate Brigade" or Phillip Thomas Tucker's "The South's Finest: The First Missouri Confederate Brigade from Pea Ridge to Vicksburg" if anyone wants to read up.

They may not be as famous as those units in the AoNV, however, any scholar will admit that they were an elite unit. Do consider adding them for flavour and just to give those boys the recognition they deserve.

Excellent! I'd give the 5th MO infantry a sharpshooter trait. The 5th's company K was also known as the 'Dunklin county deadshots' although there were also troops from Stoddard county (they are very close).

Also, 5 other companies were made of real tough frontiersmen from places like Polk, Newton, Johnson and Henry counties.

1st Missouri Brigade

Some Info I found on the Missouri Brigade Barksdale. I got this from History of the First and Second Missouri Confederate Brigades by Robert S. Bevier Chapter 9.

The Organization of the First Missouri brigade was instigated by General Price on December 2nd 1861. At his camp in Osceola.

I wonder is it possible to add regiments to an already existing bde?

Thing is I wanted them to appear for a possible Pea Ridge. At the same time the 5th MO (not at Pea Ridge) was a definate integral part of this unit.

Thanks for the info!

Gray, could you make the original Brigade appear with an open element slot that can be manually added later? This is the way the TX Ranger brigade currently enters; it can only acquire its last element if the player adds it. This way the SS regiment could be added by the player to the brigade if so desired.

I guess the TX Ranger brigade must be a special case then, contained somewhere in the executable? Only reason I brought it up was that Pocus has already confirmed this unit can only get its last element by manual addition by the player.

At any rate your fix sounds like a good one - thanks for the quick addition!

Thanks for this Gray. First rate work and speedy too.
The Yankees won't stand a chance now, especially with the Stonewall brigade returning.
Does your screenie mean the CSA is getting another leader: Lewis Henry Little?
Pea Ridge here we come.

Damn Gray - you rock man! (and coming from a geologist, this is my highest praise :D )

If you could find a way to add the missing TX Ranger bde regiment in the same way that would be great.

BTW, when Pocus first looked into the TX Ranger issue, he said it was "WAD, by accident".

Thanks again!

Grey, the 5th wasn't just a company of sharpshooters, but an entire regiment.

This is a shot from the sharpshooter unit from the Orphan Bde.
The 5th MO should be like this unit.
