*** Birth of America update 1.06 readme ***
Friday, April 14, 2006

***Bugs fixes***

1- Bug fix on fleet & armies handling.

*** Gameplay additions & changes ***
1- Refining and rationalization of the fort effect. They now generate a 'Zone of Control' in their own region. To move out of it, you must move to a region in which you have a military control at least equal to the enemy military control where the fort is (so you can't bypass easily a fort and have to neutralize it / cover it before).
2- Auto-entranch for still armies (to be refined) and ambush order staying from turn to turn.
3- Harbors now have exit points, not all regions are allowed now.
4- Changes and updates on the scenarios and events scripts, corrections to some regions.

*** User interface additions ***

1- New option to reduce overheat on some CPU. Add this line in the Birth of America\BoA\Settings\General.opt file: CPUThrottling = 1
This will reduce progressively the frame rate of the game when the mouse is still. To check if the option is correctly activated, goes to the options window, system tab and check FullDebug. With the mouse still, you should see the FPS count decrease progressively to 10. The problem only occurs on some PC with high-end video cards that overheat in some cases.

2- Tooltip delay. The option is directly integrated into the game, goes to the Option window.
3- Improvement in the handling of fleet & armies (loading/unloading)
4- 3 new icons on the units panel: Detection value, hide value, and being in a ZOC (this one only appears if applicable)

*** AI ***
1- Major work on the AI, who thinks rather differently now, compared to 1.05. Expect more opposition! (changes too numerous to list all, but it involved the whole AI library).

the 1.06 focus has been put in the AI. I hope you will see an improvement!

The patch can update any versions, but you should delete manually save games if you were in 1.04 or lower.

Save games of version 1.05 are compatibles with 1.06

ok, for the few who read a possible errors about militias: it works as expected. American will receive their first militias in august 1776 and the second batch in the first part of 1777.

the patch is reputed bug-free for now ;)

Where is the link to the patch? It's not on the download/patch page of the official Web site.

Folks,

Just to let you know ... I have found one serious bug in the new patch (Pocus has confirmed this). You will be unable to load any land units aboard any naval units. Unload works fine.

So, you can either play with 1.06 and keep that in mind, or you can continue on with 1.05. I suppose Pocus will track this down quickly after the Easter holiday.

moving the ship/fleet tab over the land/unit tab...

Posted: Sun Apr 16, 2006 3:47 pm
by Fouche
Hello....Ok I am playing the 1775 Campaign with the 1.06 patch and though I cannot load land forces/tabs onto the ship tabs...I can in a port move the ship tab over the land unit and it can load the land unit that way. Of course what one has to do is to make sure the unit or the army/force is equal to or smaller than the weight allowed by the fleet/ships. So I believe if one follows this method one can upgrade to 1.06 until a fix is made available.

Sorry for this bug, I corrected a last minute bug on fleet handling, but the test to prevent the crash is over zealous it seems :(

The method of Fouche works. Others possiblities are (until the fix of monday (GMT evening)) where I will be before my working computer):

a) play a scenario with French or American against the English, as they have few ships (the AI is not affected by the bug)
b) roll-back to 1.05 by applying 1.05 over 1.06 (it works)

Sorry again, with such a small team it can happens to let slip a bug like this one into a patch.

The superb customer service of Pocus continues. This is the least buggy new game that I've ever played and yet Pocus keeps coming with patches that are really enhancing play and are not really required for any true bugs.

What a product!

However, it seems the influx of new players has stopped. It seems word-of-mouth has gone dry. :p leure:

1.06 small correction

by Cinncinatus
Thanks for makng the map corrections I posted earlier, only Halifax, Virginia should be one region west or left (that is in "Coles Ford" rather than "Charlotte.") Otherwise so far 1.06 looks better all around.

If and when you make a unit/scenario editor available, I will be one of the first to contribute some new scenarios. I previously did some French and Indian War and Rev War scenarios for Shrapnel Games' "Horse and Musket" I, which scenarios can be found here:

Keep up the excellent work!

Kudos

Thanks and keep up the good work guys! This game is awsome and you continue to improve it with each version, never mind a few niggling bugs. We know you'll get them fixed as soon as you can, usually very fast by industry standards.

With this kind of product support, hopefully you will get not only a loyal following, but a HUGE loyal following.

Tooltip Delay

An undocumented feature has been found... :siffle:

It appears the Tooltip Delay funtion found in Options is not working correctly. On the first setting, tooltips pop-up instantly, on the second setting, they pop-up after a short delay, then blink on and off continuously after that. The third and fourth settings don't appear to do anything at all.

This isn't really a problem for me at the moment, as I like them to pop-up quickly. But after awhile, I will probably get to the point where the tooltips aren't needed nearly as often, and I might prefer the longer delay in order to avoid seeing the tooltips unless I want to.

Anyway, I really like the improvements to the game so far with v1.06.1, all else seems to be working quite well for me.

I also have V1.06.1 but I do not get any problems with the tooltips. They work perfectly for me. A great improvement. Maybe it's a graphic card glitch?

I think it is related with the optical mouse problem that can make the cursor 'giggle' (thus resetting the tooltip delay).

Tooltip Delay

Well, I guess the problem is likely with my laptop, or as Pocus mentioned, with my optical mouse. As a test, I installed the game on my home computer, updated it to v1.06.1, and found that I don't have the same problem as I do on my laptop. I think I will un-install the game from the laptop, then re-install from scratch and upgrade to v1.06.1 to see what happens.

As an aside, both computers use the MS driver built into WinXP for optical mice, I do not load 3rd-party mouse drivers. Also, I believe both mice are from Logitech, although they are not the same kind of mouse.

2 Weeks later...

Since it has been almost two weeks after the release of 1.06.1 please don't mind me asking:

Could You throw us a bone regarding the progress on 1.07, please? :innocent: :siffle:

by Pocus
1.07 is not due before 2 weeks, as we are gearing up for the next project, you know the one about the war that ... biiiip (clue, its about a war ;) ).

That being said, 1.07 will have some more possibilities regarding naval operations, more shortkeys, and a further refined ZOC rule + some other things.

Two weeks??? :p leure:

That's downright cruel of You, to give us weekly fixes for a while and then all of a sudden to withdraw the stuff... This "new project" of Yours better be good, I tell You! :fleb: :niark:

Ah, well, back to two more weeks of commanding Johnny Lobster. A pity, judging by their recent performance, those Continentals could surely use my help... :innocent:

I didn't realize a new patch would be coming out so soon... well, soon for me, Henry seems upset at the prospect of two weeks :niark:

Pocus, I hope you will read my justification thread in the Council Forum for adding Benjamin Franklin as a leader in the F&I campaign, and include it in ver. 1.07. Would it be fairly easy to do?

I object to any thought of including leaders because someone is a fan. The designers thought out how many leaders there ought to be and what the effect on game play is due to how many leaders there are. Franklin's historical effect on FIW was miniscule at most. Including him, with no less than four leadership advantages, does violence to the game system without any justification.

Dude, Relax!

Geez dude, relax... It's just a computer game. If the designers don't like my suggestion, they won't incorporate it. No need to be snotty about it.

That being said, I would argue your point that Franklin's historical effect on the F&I Wars was "miniscule". I suggest you read the autobiographical reference I linked to in the other thread. If not for Franklin, Braddock likely would have never left the coast. Which means he would never have set out for Ft. Duquesne and thus not got himself killed in the process.

If we're going to be slaves to historical accuracy, then Braddock should be removed from the game after about the first three turns, and George Washington should be invulnerable. And that's just the start... Anyway, I seriously doubt that adding Franklin into the mix would seriously disturb game balance.

In conclusion, I hold that Franklin had as much effect on the F&I Wars as many of the other "Leaders" that did make it into the game.

I further object to your characterization of me as "snotty." I said nothing when you first brought up this ridiculous suggestion, but decided on your becoming militant about it that a contrasting viewpoint ought to be raised.

Please refrain from personal insults in the future.

Indeed...

Your own words speak for themselves, I need say nothing more.

I have no regard for you, sir.

Keep it cool... Franklin will be added or not based on PhilThib decision anyway, I don't meddle too much with the historical DB...

That's generally why people use words.

[quote}I have no regard for you, sir.[/QUOTE]
Oh, grow up. Who do you think you are, Redmond Barry? Sonny, I first read Franklin's autobiography (unabridged text, in print) before you were born.

As for "take it outside ladies," the comment from the peanut gallery, I have no idea why anyone finds it necessary to insult my sexuality just because I said, as plainly as I could, that I find no justification for including Benjamin Franklin as a leader in the French-Indian War scenarios.

Then, after being called "snotty," all I see from a moderator is "keep it cool."

Sorry. When the moderators act as though I am somehow reprehensible because I have been insulted, I have done. I have tried to be a positive contributor here, but I am not about to put up with this.

Go ahead and be as silly as you like. I won't be posting here anymore (I am sure my newfound pals will enjoy that and have plenty to say at my expense, but I won't be returning to enjoy reading it).
