Re: Returning to the game... and an Arty question.

"[Y]ou do not have the frontage to deploy all your units" is a likely explanation. Terrain and weather reduce frontage and range. To maximise your frontage you want Grant in command, and clear terrain in good weather. Frontage for artillery is seperate from the frontage for "combat un...

Re: Training/Upgrading of militia, volunteers & conscripts

While much of the XP discussion has focused on Militia/Volunteers, the xp method of upgrading is most efficiently employed on conscripts and conscript cav. Using a Training Officer on a conscript is less effective than on a Volunteer unit, since the gain in quality is much larger because you could h...

Re: novice question - units become fixed again

My preferred Activation setting is the second from the right (not Veteran). The rules are the same, but Veteran also hides the current activity status from you (although if a stack is fixed in place then its leader must be inactive, right?). The idea is that you won't know when you give orders wheth...

Re: novice question - units become fixed again

It sounds like you have your Activation Rules at one of the settings that allow a chance that your stack becomes fixed-in-place if your commander fails his Activation Roll. (Good for you!) When a general rolls inactive under these settings, he is forced to make a second Activation check: if he fails...

Re: viewing numbers of men

Phoenix, You should be aware, however, that the number of men and horses is entirely for flavor, and no game mechanics make use of the number of men. The "number of men" reported comes from the number of hits (hearts) an element has times a fixed multiplier that varies per unit type and is...

Re: novice question - destroying infrastructure

Orso said: If a Supply Unit could not make the journey from a supply source to a location pulling supplies within one turn, no supplies will ever arrive at that supply-pull from that source . Yes exactly. That s what i was trying t get at, bearing in mind that supplies can move intermodally. So if y...

Re: novice question - destroying infrastructure

There are various combinations of methods to destroy structures and railroads, including cards, orders to units, intentional or unintentional pillaging, etc. I will not go into the exact combinations of clicks needed to do each type, but instead try to give a general overview of what types of things...

Re: novice question - destroying infrastructure

Scorched earth and infrastructure denial are only lightly modeled at the strategic level. It is definitely a thing at the tactical level, however. By temporarily destroying or interdicting railroads and river hexes around enemy stacks, you can slow them down, disrupt their supply lines and (when com...

Re: Union Gold

Fox, That's an elegant counter-play; stationing a couple of Vols in Golden after that is trivial for the Union and probably a good idea anyway if the CSA is active in Colorado. So Farm pillaging is just normal region supply-pillaging behavior (like when there are no buildings or structures) which re...

On a related note, will Partisans destroy enemy Farm Fields\Plantations in the same way they can destroy the mines?

Re: Union Gold

Sorry, I was talking about the Colorado Gold fields, landing cannon on the Pacific wouldn't stop a Ranger rush to Denver. (?) Denver itself will be able to build more than enough stuff to chase Rangers or Cav in Golden away after a few turns. Getting back to the OP's question, no I don't think it is...

Re: Union Gold

Colorado gold is interdictable, but not permanently capturable, IMO. The other gold fields are speculative at best; some people have posted reasonable sounding California strategies, though. A Ranger rush on the Colorado gold fields from the build-point in north Texas is possible; you have to soften...

One question is whether or not the extra element arrives via script or whether it is filled from the Elite replacements pool because the unit has an empty slot in its TOE.

I recall this happening to me once, I think it had something to do with the brigade being locked or somehow being ineligble to receive the new elements, so they (it?) appeared elsewhere.

As a general rule, always concentrate your forces in as few and as large of containers (units and stacks) as possible. In Army/Corps combat, try to keep the maximum number of elements in each division (17).

Re: Harper's Ferry

HF is nice to have as either side, but it isn't decisive, and is not worth sticking your neck out for. If the Union player wants it enough to commit early, you probably can't stop them. I have heard that in real life it was a less defensible location than its representation in the game: once either ...

Re: Confederate Coastal Forts

If you are roleplaying that you care about your men and know that they can't hold the position either way, shouldn't you prefer they surrender rather than throw their lives away needlessly? If, OTOH you are maximizing, then the benefit of the MAYBE one hit the enemy division will take while crushing...

Re: Confederate Coastal Forts

So correct me if I'm wrong but are you suggesting that I set my fort defenders outside the fort? Will I at least have a chance to kill some of my opponents forces then just surrendering? Yes, although a couple of militia and a coastal gun will not do much against a division landing on your fort. Th...

Re: Confederate Coastal Forts

lightbrave, Here we should make a distinction between the way the game works, and the way you think it should work. Under the current engine, stacks in structures will only engage in combat if the enemy is in Assault posture (you can Sortie, but this only tells them to attack when a friendly force en...

Re: Synchronize Move

Yes, stacks in the same command structure, and from the same region. Sometimes they march and arrive on the same day, but just as often they get there a day apart.

Traffic issues could account for the difference, although I never got it to work consistently before traffic was implemented.

If there is one mechanic in this game that I do not understand, it is Synchronize Move. Re: AI Supply What Am I Missing

Even if they had a depot in Fayetteville the CSA would need good weather for supplies to flow from it to Springfield: an imaginary wagon needs to be able to make the trip within 15 days or supplies do not flow. Don't forget that stockades can also send (and more importantly relay) supplies to forces...
